Maybe it takes time to get caught up on 14 pages' worth of discussion. . .

I was opposed to exorbitant amounts of money being spent on an arena, and absolutely hated and opposed Calgary Next, but the arena and convention centre was going to transform downtown and the entire area around the Stampede grounds. This project is just as important, if not more to the city of Calgary as it is to the Flames.

Love the jab at not spending money at the dome because lol politics and taxes on a hockey forum which is dedicated to those who support the team that plays at the dome and probably is littered with people who do go to games…
Jesus Christ this is nuts.
Back to day 1 of those who go to games and those who don’t and why the “tax” money would be better spent somewhere else. News flash, taxes are going to continue to go up wether we get an arena or not, they never go down

Whoever is whining about building in the city needs to try building something in Rocky View County. Have fun with that.

I think what we all can agree on is that generally speaking there is a deep rooted passion for this club but also for the city and that passion is ringing true on both sides of this debate. There’s a happy ending to all of this and for all parties I’m just hoping that it’s able to be told… I can see where taxpayers are at a ‘when’s enough enough’ stance when it comes to costs and a couple billionaires quibbling over what amounts to more than a life time of earnings for much of the taxpayers who will be chipping into the project. At the end of the day though the posturing of this and timing of this are incredibly odd and a bad look I think on both sides. Here’s hoping they can come together and figure out a compromise but sadly I don’t think I’ll be holding my breath.

This arena, a two city-block development, $600m plus went from submission to approval in about 100 days.

The only thing kinda odd here is the need to “get in front of this” the way the mayor did.
Just gives off weird vibes. Grandstanding vibes.
I would think a proper strategy is to let the Flames actually cancel and then I am sure the media comes calling and you give comment then. Nothing is lost by letting it happen and it dares the Flames to actually do it in writing. Maybe it wouldn’t have gotten there?
I voted for the Mayor but knew I didn’t agree with the way she operated. The mayor seems to love a pulpit, and sometimes that can make things worse.

These all seem very knee jerk and emotional.

Well, the Province did say they’d look into ways of removing Chu if possible, so I don’t know what the problem there is.

Hm. Really?
I'm most surprised that Government employees are even working at this time of year to make boneheaded decisions like these.
Thats probably against their employment conditions. Might have to take it up with a Rep.

Just get the damn thing built.
The Flames need it, the city needs it and at the end of the day, taxes will still increase whether it gets built or not. The debate is the same in every city over sports venues and when they do eventually get built, no one is forced to move away due to the increase in taxes.
