I guess the big concern is a group of athletes travelling to different locations across the continent may be exposed to different risk factors than others. As a nurse we have to do a self declaration before each shift for symptoms of covid and aren't allowed to go into work if we are having any symptoms.

The fact that roughly 10% of the league has covid indicates to me that they should be getting tested. If 10% of the Canadian population had covid we would have 3 million cases right now.

But we have no idea how many cases we have out in the general population. How many NHL cases would have been caught if they were relying strictly on symptomatic testing? I suspect (and I’m not in the medical field at all) that we would have a sh*t-ton of identified cases if the general population was tested even every three days.

As predicted, the NFL will no longer test asymptomatic players.

Starting Sunday, only unvaccinated players and anyone experiencing potential symptoms of COVID-19 would undergo testing, according to a memo sent to teams and obtained by The Athletic. Asymptomatic players would be subject to random spot testing for the duration of the season. Unvaccinated players will still be tested daily.

They already changed the rules to get out of covid protocol and play:

First came a move earlier this week to allow asymptomatic vaccinated players to test out of COVID-19 protocols more quickly, if they can post two negative tests on the same day, or one negative test and an antibody test shows the individual has reached a certain level.

How about we wait until we have more evidence before making those claims. It is a possibility but it is important to remember that there is a lag between infection, symptoms, and hospitalizations. Using a group of professional athletes as a representation of society isn't going to end well.

If the goal is protecting the general population why isn't check out guy at walmart tested just as often. Or people playing recreational sports. Or teachers. Or nurses.

It is to protect the players , not everyone else

Otherwise, they would have tested every fan on the stand.
