But still, it makes no financial sense to quit. He still had one more full season left at $3 million, so by resigning, he's leaving somewhere around $4.5 on the table. If his contract was expiring, it might make more sense, and you leave with your ego and integrity intact, but this is financially unwise. You don't leave that kind of money behind, you make them pay you out by firing you.

He has to have something else lined up. It's the only way it makes sense.

He's made a lot of money and I think he's one of the classier guys in the NHL that wanted to do what was best for the team.

i was just watching some of the presser, and maurice seems to be saying he was not having fun coming to the rink these days and the the team deserved to hear a new voice etc.

has there ever been any other coach that has stepped down in absence of a health or "scandal" reason

Listening to his press conference sounds like he feels the team needs a new voice.

Pretty honest, refreshing.

Uh, or he's comfortable enough financially to walk away. If the situation isn't right/you don't feel like things are going well - financials aren't going to make it right.

He is a good coach and he is likely confident that he will find another job when he wants one.

Hopefully not health related or anything character related. Guy seems like a stand up person.

Maybe he's going to manage a Euro football club, ala Ralph Kruger / Ted Lasso.

Maurice is a really good coach and will land on his feet. The money he is leaving on the table is likely irrelevant if he is looking to get right back into coaching as he will be a very hot candidate if that is what he wants. Pretty smart by him to get out now and give himself the freedom to start pursuing other jobs around the league immediately as teams begin falling out of the race and looking towards next season. Win-win for both sides it feels like.

He will find a coaching gig pretty easily I imagine. Where are the next openings going to be? Philly? Florida?

Good riddance, Have not been able to stand the guy since the blasted Matthew during the play in series. Anyone with half a brain and working eyes knows he didn't intend to step on Scheifele.

The reality of it is he just didn't want to deal with one more Winnipeg winter. Winter is coming and he waas realizing he'd rather not.

The money is huge and all that stuff but I don’t think you can over look the stress and toll it takes on your health and sanity to do at job like this at this level… Especially if he has family kids etc …

he is going to spend his new free time looking for the camera angle that shows Tkachuk stomped on Scheifele. It's eating away at him

Since it is not health, family related or 'sinister', I say good riddance you putz

Jim Rutherford hired him twice, so one has to imagine he has options in Vancouver.
