I’m old.
I can’t recall what the mood was like at the draft. He was a slow starter though and should have been sent back to junior his first year. Then he finally caught on a bit, but was eventually a holdout in a contract dispute. He was always second fiddle to Bure.

So the Nucks could have had Jagr and Bure at the same time… that would have been beyond scary.

I recall Nedved being at a friends place for dinner. He was brought over to Canada and had some Czech folks here who took him in here in Calgary I believe.

He went to Fowler for a time while I was still there.

And if they didn't trade for Lindros, maybe the Flames would have. Apparently the Flames had a pretty serious offer on the table and Quebec chose the Philly offer.

If Philly doesn't make the offer, Lindros most likely becomes a Ranger
They even accepted the Rangers offer minutes after accepting the Flyers one.

Maybe he would have been traded to every team?

It was a huge local story at the time, he defected during the Mac's tournament. to be fair to Nedved, he was productive in his one WHL season and played nearly 1000 games- he was no Jagr, but provided decent value for his pick
he ended up being the 9th highest scorer in the draft year , with quite a few of the guys ahead of him being also Eastern European

There is no guarantee that Jagr would be the player he became if he ended up somewhere else. I think that the influence of people like Lemieux and Francis helped him achieve his full potential. Ending up in Washington or Minnesota probably does not motivate him the same.

Article up on Wolf as he became the first AHL rookie since Soros to win 29 games.
Rare Air
This killed me though ...

"Our area scouts from when he was in junior just loved him. They looked past the size because they could tell how smart he was, how polished and efficient at a young age. He's just a winner. He's won at every level. You could see the drive, the focus, the competitiveness, the hockey sense. Those outweigh the size. To get Dustin, we didn't see it as much of a risk."
|
They looked past his size by taking him sure ... but waiting until the second last pick of the draft isn't exactly jumping on a player with conviction.
It's like when the Wings took Datsyuk and Zetterberg late so they're drafting is second to none! No way you wait until round 7 for a superstar if you know he's a super star.
Similar with the Gaudreau pick. The Flames like him. Wanted him. And had to decide when to take him and not lose him to another club. Fourth round it is, not 7th and last pick.
Anyway ... I'm nitpicking.

At 31 wins now. Still 0 shutouts, would love to know how many 1 and 2 GAA games he's had this season.

They also could have drafted Keith Tkachuk that year with their other first round pick. Instead they took some bust while a rival western Canadian team selected Tkachuk with the very next pick. A lesson they would learn from and never let it happen again.

By my count:
16 x 1 goal against.
12 x 2 goals against.

Yes, its kind of funny given his penchant for shutouts in the WHL. I have changed his name from W0lf to Wo1f:

Only a good draft pick if we use him in our NHL team. Being an awesome AHL player and then ending up elsewhere NHL will be a bust pick imo.
