These are Alberta residents and the outbreak appears to have happened here so I assume it's part of the total at some point. At least that is what would make sense.

Bottom line for the NHL and for other sports this is getting out of control quick. Realistically how much of a runway does sports really have before it is getting forced?

Ohh for sure given how quickly it has spread, may have already infected almost everybody on the roster. I am talking more along the lines of the league as a whole and the logistics of continuing on. The issues with travel, quarantine, border, scheduling of missed games, arena availability and more. Sooner or later a lot of issues need to be dealt with so that they can figure out where they will continue the season if they do in fact shut down for a month or something to get things under control.

It's a fast moving situation and a lot can change soon so who even knows? Were in wild territory here.

Thinking about this situation has me a little bit encouraged.

With how fast and how many infection happens on the Flames, which were mostly caught because of testing - it seems likely that Omicron is much more widespread around here than we know about, which means that very few cases are causing noticeable symptoms.

I could be wrong, of course, but doing the math in my head it seems like this could be good news in that it’s going to affect lots of people (maybe all of us) in the next couple months, and very few may notice.

Sydney (and NSW) has just removed most restrictions this past week and the cases in have shot up like a hockey stick -- from 200 (last week), to 500(Monday), to 1000 (Wed) to 1700 (Thurs) yesterday. We were in hard lockdown from July until mid-November, so the government wants to keep the economy going and not put any restrictions back on until they have to. That will likely mean cases keep rising and more people get it. Haven't seen the effects to the hospital system as of yet, but I'm sure there will be more people with in the next few weeks (and in ICU).

Faced with the spiraling rise of COVID-19 cases in the region, late this afternoon the Montreal Canadiens organization received a request from Quebec public health officials to host tonight's game against the Philadelphia Flyers in a closed setting with no fans in attendance at the Bell Centre. We have accepted this request in order to help ensure the safety and security of our fans and fellow citizens throughout our community. An update on the status of Saturday's scheduled game against the Boston Bruins will be provided tomorrow.

We have obtained assurances that beginning with our games in January, we will return to a partial capacity scenario and be able to host fans once more. More details will follow in the days to come and as the portrait of this ever-evolving pandemic becomes clearer. In the interim we would continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated, get their booster shots when possible, and be responsible with their social and family gatherings throughout the holidays. We hope that with rigor and a collective effort from all of us, we will be able to come together in a near future in 2022.

I sort of agree with this thought, but professional hockey players are a different demographic than the rest of the population in terms of health, fitness, etc. And based on the speed that the virus spread through the team, the possibility exists that due to the sheer numbers of new cases and the lag behind infection and hospitalization, we could see the medical system get overwhelmed again. With no "silver bullet" vaccine to save our bacon.

I'm not saying it will happen, but it's just not enough information known yet. And Kenney is going for the "Best Christmas Ever" model (let's relax rules), where other provinces are going for safety first. And we know how well that went last time around...

I think you're forgetting that regular covid actually affected very few of us as well. Minor symptoms for the large majority infected. How many cases of normal covid went undetected do you figure? suddenly after 2 years you're feeling comfortable with the math in your head, that's great. But it never quite added up to begin with.

Exactly. I guarantee you that almost everyone here knows at least one person who has had a surgery or diagnosis delayed because the hospitals are full of covid patients. I wouldn't be surprised if the eventual death toll from delayed surgeries/treatments/diagnoses eventually rivals the covid death toll.

Do you not see what the real problem is here? It isn't Covid. It's our inept health care system. Do our leaders fix that or continue shutting #### down and vaccinating everyone for the rest of our lives when extreme measures are only required for the small vulnerable population.
