This, or straight win/loss or win/loss/tie. Any point system where you don't incentivize going into OT with more points up for grabs fixes a lot of problems.

The NHL will never do this as they need teams to be bunched up together as the season progresses.

I still believe in zero points for losing.

Regulation win 2 points
Overtime win 2 points
Shootout win 1 point
All losses 0 points

Shootout wins today are still tracked as a non ROW. Why not just make it 1 point, that way it doesn't reward a team to circle the ice and do figure 8s until the shootout because you're not really going to gain a bunch from it.

Just bring back tie games. 4v4 was fun until coaches figured out how to defend it. 3v3 was fun until coaches figured out how to defend. Shoot-outs are stupid. It doesn't matter what changes are brought in, coaches and players will adapt and a few months later the same discussion will be had.

Just need a code word...yell "DUMP!"...if the offending team doesn't dump it within say 5 seconds they get a penalty. Linesmen already officiate through yells

An addition I'd consider...if your team does have to 'dump', then all of your players need to lap their own net (or maybe just own zone faceoff circle) before they can engage defensively

How about head coach, two assistants and goalie coach vs the other teams?

Sudden death, no time limit. The fact that OT is shortened is an antiquated idea from when teams flew commercial. 3 on 3, 20 minute periods, quick flood, no full intermission, abolish the shoot-out.

You may as well just go straight to shootout.

To me, this is a solution to something that isn't a problem. Could always just go straight to a shootout or bring back ties.

Ties are awful. I think the only way to fix this is to change the points system where an OT win is worth more than a shoutout win.

playing a 4-on-4 10 overtime is the obvious answer. If tied after 10 minutes it's a tie. As a sport, your overtime method should not be so different that you're afraid to go to it (shootout).

Get rid of points, go to W-L-T like NFL.

Which I get, but why not expand the playoff format if you want to keep teams in the hunt? Doing the NBA model for each division would be fun:

3v4 - winner = 3 seed, loser plays winner of 5v6 for final spot.

Rewards top 2 teams and keeps hope alive for all but the worst.

And it would eliminate the annoying gap between regular season end and playoff start.

?? This would result in longer games and more shootouts

Win - 3 points
OT win - 2 Points
OT loss - 1 point
Loss - 0 points

Just make OT - 5 minutes 4 on 4, followed by 5 minutes 3 on 3, and so on. At the end the 1 on 1 will replace the shootout and there will be lots of breakaways anyways.

Problem has always been the playoffs, need to change the wildcard format so you have a couple teams in each division playing best of 5 (or 3) to compete for the last playoff spot.

Whatever options I don't want more whistles. So somehow they would need to enforce over/back violations without whistling the play down.

Opposing team gets to choose 2 forwards and 1 defenseman for the other team. These are the only players that can play in OT. Abolish the shootout and play until there's a winner.

I don't think this would work. Over and back, ref blows whistle but play continues, you have to shoot the puck into the other team's end? No thanks.

I think it just needs to be a penalty for delay of game... it's simple, straightforward, and a 4 on 3 in OT is usually a goal anyway.
