This is setting us up for like.. a mid-season occupation of the new building eh?
Oh well, I guess they don't have to blow up the Dome right away.

They should still be on-target for a fall 2024 opening. I think they originally wanted it ready for Stampede 2024, but that probably won't happen.
Edmonton had its groundbreaking in March 2014 and opened in September 2016. This should have a similar construction timeline.

I guess supply chain issues with getting shiny toilet bowl-shaped objects from outer space weren't a big deal in 2014..??

They really picked one of the worst times to pull the trigger finally. Inflation on steel is insane right now and supply chain problems are everywhere, regular pipe piles have doubled in price in the last 9 months.

It just wouldnt be the Flames otherwise.
Realistically, and I hate to say this, but I'd have smashed the pause button on this.
Not scrapped it or even changed anything materially, but just wait for the world to get back to normal. Because you're absolutely right. Materials cost, supply chain issues and supplemental costs, trying to undergo a major construction with COVID precautions incurs additional costs.
It just seems like there is factory that manufactures Red Flags and its firing its entire inventory all over the place right now.
Tranquilo people....tranquilo...wait for the calm.

I might have only been dealing with moderately large capital construction projects for just under a decade. But if I've learned anything in that time "the calm" would just be even more expensive prices but suppliers can guarantee those prices for two weeks instead of one.

Unfortunately ownership's fortunes are tied to oil and no one wanted to belly up to the bar counter cycle. They could have saved some big money building this over the last 5 years.

I hear Oilers fans are throwing jerseys on the ice again. The new arena could always recycle them as urine catchers.

According to the new deal, the Flames are on the hook for any cost over runs above and beyond what has already been agreed upon financially. One of two things will happen. Either the Flames will take a bath on this and have to fork over much more than they anticipated (should have pulled the trigger years ago instead of dragging their feet), or they will value engineer this #### out of this and it will end up looking even more like a Costco. My money is on the later occurring.

If the hot dogs are the same price as Costco, I'm 100% down for this.

Taxpayers will end up being dinged for cost overruns. That's the way it works.

The way things are going, prices for materials might just keep going up. No point in waiting to see.
I just hope the increased price doesn't mean things have to be cut back. Calgary deserves the best building possible.

Who's the general contractor?
I just found this and maybe it was mentioned previously.
To manage the complex construction delivery of the $550 million project, local construction firm CANA Construction partnered with Mortenson Construction have been selected for their in-depth local knowledge and vast experience in construction of sport and entertainment venues across North America.
