So Preds-Flames was going to be postponed regardless.
What a sad day.

So what is the end game here? Even with the vaccines, it won't stop covid from existing apparently. When do the powers that be just accept that this is something that we're going to have to live with? Or is this the new normal forever?

It’s going to be the norm until 100% of people are vaccinated and the unvaccinated don’t fill the hospitals across the planet.
So that will pretty much never happen so this is life now. Fun!

Hospital capacity. Hospital capacity. Hospital capacity.
Say it with me. The entire reason this is the event it is, and the entire reason there are still precautions taken and tests being done.
We will not hit a point where they say “#### it, let it flood the hospitals and collapse the healthcare system”. So, when that isn’t the case anymore then there won’t be endless testing and isolating. Nothing to do with the fact that we will have Covid rolling around forever. Everything to do with hospital capacity.
What’s the endgame? Operational hospitals with capacity for emergencies.

So what was all this talk about herd immunity? It was never expected that 100% of people would be vaccinated, that was never realistic.

That's actually a really good question, that's best discussed in the corona-part of the forum.

The issue with aiming for herd immunity is the disease will continue to mutate so that might not even be viable. Omicron has a higher chance of reinfecting those who have had it previously as per preliminary data for instance.

Not sure if it has been discussed already. I have tickets for the Toronto game this Thursday. What happens if I cannot attend the re-scheduled game? Is it 100% on me to sell/trade the tickets, or would the box office assist in finding an acceptable replacement?

I think a big part of the herd immunity failure is that the variants that tend to be more vaccine resistant, are popping up in countries that had relatively low vaccination rates (too low for herd immunity). The fact those countries have allowed the virus to propagate more means more chances for variants to arise and spread to other regions.
I understand some of those regions have less than great health care systems, but as long as there are regions with large unvaccinated populations, and as long as we allow people to travel back and forth to those regions, we are going to keep seeing the virus evolve and vaccines are going to continue to struggle to keep up with variants.

Didn't we basically hit that point in Alberta in the 4th wave?

I do not see a way around this other than doing crazy crap like Austria is doing. Which is not a path any country should go down. Maybe all we can do is focus on treating the symptoms. The whole thing looks very glim.
Oh well, maybe I'll start to look for some property off the grid, when hockey isn't even fun anymore what else is there to lose?
That is the last I'll say here about it. Hope the players recover without serious problems.

I say shut down the league until after Christmas, and cancel Olympic participation.
The league can use the next 2 weeks to rejig the schedule and fit in as many games as the can in the olympic break time period.
