The afternoon hosts don't seem well versed enough to talk about much else: hockey, betting and the once-a-week NFL interview. The guests are bland overall. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Yeah it seems like there's way too much gambling talk on 960 these days. Very boring stuff.

Thank you! I was just texting my buddy about that. I rarely tune in anymore, but when I do, it’s primarily football or gambling talk, What’s going on there? I was a daily listener for 7 or more years, now I *tune in for 10 minutes and I wanna smash my radio.

I'm gonna guess that's because they are paid to discuss it.

Pro sports are desperate for ways to drive fan engagement in an era of cord-cutting. Gambling is a tremendous driver of fan engagement in the NFL - millions of people follow the league just for their pools, and rarely watch a game broadcast.

I remember I had a friend who's dad is an old school Chinese guy who immigrated here back in the 90's, worked as a chef at a Chinese restaurant, and knew nothing about North American sports. He was amazed that you could gamble legally with Sports Select, so he got my buddy to teach him the rules of football and hockey just so he could gamble on it. Within a month, guy was constantly watching football and hockey games, and could identify players (by their numbers) and if they are in or out of line ups. He was more connected with sporting news than me or my buddy lol.

The amount of gambling talk on the Fan960 definitely feels over the top these days if you're someone like me who has no interest in it. It seems like every time I have a chance to listen to the station, it's either a guest talking about picks, or the guys are talking about their pool.

Radio pay is so crappy I figured they need the supplemental income from gambling.

I think its general population crappy from what I understand. Low pay and constant hunger games atmosphere with people being shed all the time.

Trouble with sports media these days is that everyone has access to 'insider info' 24/7 so it is difficult to bring forward a perspective that is really informative and engaging.
The best segments for me are always prospect updates and opposing team analysis before a game.
Anything Flames related i've already consumed on the internet.

Best segments for me are burger talk, and anything involving Brent Krahn.

Some of the most painful radio this afternoon when Logan had to fill for 15 minutes prior to the Brad news conference starting - its literally your job, be prepared and have 15 minutes of material ready to go instead of dead air/humming tunes/repeating the same things 20 times.
And some quality poaching from Francis in the Treliving presser - Francis asked about testing results speeds in Can vs USA. However, Francis was on the Marek show earlier in the day and Jeff mentioned that exact point to Eric and he admitted he hadn't thought about that before.

Some of those Alpine Credit ones weren't too bad. Less funny lately. The mypillow schtick was groan inducing, don't miss those being gone. Seems now to be those weak attempts at trying to discuss luxury automobiles, Lexus IIRC. It's so blatant it's painful.
Speaking of painful, as Jay said, those AutoValue ones are atrocious. It's as if they fed the script of anchorman and comedy routines from comedians that were just the right kind and amount of offensive into a poorly programmed AI. And then ran that AI on the Trump Freedom Phone.
Seriously, a riff on an autistic savant character, from a movie more than three decades old, mixed with a discount bin Ron Burgundy parody is just painful. With that as their advertising, I half expect a shopping experience there to be a guy wearing motor oil blackface while telling jokes about unwed mothers trying to sell me the toyota out front that someone dropped their keys to in the parking lot.
What's next? "I may not be a smart man Jenny, but I know what a sparkplug is!"

I find the morning show (who I otherwise love) do quite a bit when discussing other sports. When they make their weekly NFL picks they don't even pick who they think will win, it's always against the spread.
I know gambling has always had deep ties in sports, but it seems worse these days than ever before (at least in an out in the open way). It's annoying.

I hate the gambling talk as well… but understand it’s revenue for the station. With that said, I really don’t understand why they don’t at least once a season spend 20 minutes and explain what they are talking about and how it all works. I have no idea what the over/under, point spread, or any other gambling terminology means. I might actually even consider putting in a bet if they did explain it. But they assume you know everything they are chatting about.
