Icon27 Ben Bishop's career is over due to degenerative knee injury

Was almost a Calgary Flame at the trade deadline a few years ago.

https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/st...jim-nill-says/

Quote:
After more than a year trying to return from knee surgery, Stars goaltender Ben Bishop’s career is over, general manager Jim Nill said Saturday morning.

Bishop, who had surgery last year to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, spent the last 14 months rehabilitating his knee. He joined the Stars at the beginning of training camp and practiced with the team almost every day since the beginning of the season.

Most recently, Bishop played for AHL affiliate Texas on Thursday night in his first game since the 2020 postseason. He allowed eight goals on 34 shots.

“It’s no secret, he has a degenerative knee injury, and he went down there, he wanted to be a big part of this,” Nill said. “He wanted to do everything he could to get back. In the end, by going through the process, going down there and playing, he found out that it’s the end of his career.”

Bishop is scheduled to speak with reporters on Tuesday morning.

Terrible news. This is one of those goalies that brought his 'A' game when he was fully healthy. A career 2.32 GAA and .921 save % in 413 games is absolutely insane. Never won a cup but almost did with the Lightning in 2015, just went against a hotter Chicago team that had all of the right pieces for a dynasty.

Best of luck in your future endeavors, Ben. Really wanted you as a Flame went the opportunity arose, just wasn't in the cards. Makes you wonder how Calgary could have been if we did acquire a goalie of this man's caliber when he was available.

Too bad....really thought he would be a great one and was for a time. Had all the tools.

Still carved out a pretty nice career.

excellent goalie in his prime, Vezina finalist twice. Shame it ends that way for him.

I just noticed on HockeyDB that he played one game in the AHL this year.
8.2 GAA and a save pct of .765. Yikes.
you hate to see it end like this, but he had a really good career.

What would've been the purported deal for Bishop?

Damn. You hate seeing stuff like this happen. A great goalie’s career shut down by injuries. I wish him luck in his post-hockey life

Like Sean Burke of yesteryear, Bishop was always a goalie you figure would've ended up on the Flames, given the constant chatter about him.

That was his conditioning stint just now. Made him realize his career is over.

A great goalie. Tragic that his career is cut short.

Yeesh... that really, really sucks. I mean it's harder to maintain yourself physically when you're that big, but the guy was a HOF caliber goalie if he'd been able to play a full career.

14 months of rehab to try and continue to get back. Watching your team go to the Stanley cup final, in bubbles trying off your hardest. I couldn’t even imagine the strength it took.

Best of luck in his retirement, hell of a cut short career.

The first really tall goalie to have major success in the NHL. Not sure I’d call him a trailblazer, but he had a fine career that was cut short early.

Terrible news. Hoping the best for Bishop going forward. Never like to hear about a player being forced to retire under these circumstances.

I guess the Flames' dodged a pretty big bullet by missing out on him a few years back.

I feel for him, I'm pretty sure I'm also on my way of retiring from playing rec hockey as a goalie myself.
Tore my left meniscus in 2019 and took about a half year to heal with no physio than just before the first lockdown in March of 2020 I had a 2nd degree tear on my right knee. Feeling good after physio but need to ice after each game.

I haven't been the same lately,. Getting called Mike Smith or koskenin is an insult lol... Always letting in the first shot first goal.

He missed last year and this year, and just turned 35 a couple weeks ago.

Probably misses about 1/3 of his potential career. That’s pretty significant.
