Please enlighten us. Tell us how we are are now currently are actually in a democracy of free people free to make their own choices and not under the rule of a dictatorial/communist regime in Canada. Waiting to be educated, standing in a line six feet away from the next person, wearing a chin diaper looking at an empty shelf at my local grocery store, barely getting there due to the restrictions on how much gasoline I can buy ...

The ignorance in your post is astounding on so many levels it’s difficult to know where to begin.

China does horrible things, but to claim the “western” world is some guiding light of morality is ridiculous.
Propaganda works both ways, our society gobbles it up just as much if not more than China and it’s allies
Yes, and other countries also criticize the western countries for what they do, and people from the west also criticize our own, and people in China criticize their own. Different countries and different people choose and use different ways to make points about different things.

Which is good, and worth supporting.

Just because everyone is more or less crap doesn't mean that it's a bad idea to try to push others to be better.

The post was not worthy of a counter argument since it is full of blatant falsehoods and empty rhetoric.

Calgary, like most sensible western democracies voted on not having Olympics here. Too expensive and the I.O.C. needs to be taken down a few notches. We in the most cities no longer believe this event brings any propaganda value to the host city at all.

China "won" the Olympics. They are in it for the propaganda value and the propaganda value alone and cost is no object in a communist regime. Doesn't make them evil and doesn't mean they shouldn't stage a games however the parallels to the 1936 Berlin Olympics are there.

My sport is Alpine Skiing and I'm a huge World Cup fan so I know how that works.

Alpine skiers are not poor, poor athlete's who "trained there whole lives" for this one single chance. The World Cup circuit pays well for the top skiers and they are Royalty where ever they go. They win $50,000 for a first place and the best ( top 30 in each discipline) actually get by well, make careers of it and travel the world first class. For the men for instance a win at Kitzbuhel alone can make a career. If there were no such thing as Olympics the ski racing community would still do exactly what they do know and enjoy their careers. The Ski industry also provides many with great careers after racing.

Pretty sure most major winter sports like Luge or Bob Sledding or Figure Skating all work in similar fashion.

To be sure, for the the bottom half of virtually all Olympic sports and for small equatorial belt countries that are terrible at a sport, sending a guy or gal or a team to lose, but "enjoy the scene" can be fun. Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican Bob Sled team come to mind. But the "amateur athlete" ideal has long since left the barn decades ago. The Olympics are a bloated expensive mess no North American city wants any part of. If we're letting the "Pro's" in why are we still paying for the 60%-70% of actual amatuer athletes from great winter nations like Egypt and Brazil who have zero chance but want the vacation and the participation ribbon???

I'm just saying that the argument of "what about the poor athlete that trained all their lives" for the "one" chance isn't really a fair take on it's own. Hockey players are going to play Hockey and enjoy it and get paid well for. Don't worry about the Alpine racers they'll be fine.

Just my own opinion however I just don't care if they go or not. The Olympic Ideal just doesn't exist to me. It's just another race or game.

Gotta go PVR today's race. Watch the Flames tonight and I won't cry if Conner and Crosby can't get together and make a mockery of some bush league amatuer hockey team from lower slobovia somewhere.

Rebuttals using Canada’s problems can’t honestly be made in good faith.

Totally normal thing that would happen here….:

Shortly after Peng Shuai, one of China's most popular tennis players, levelled allegations of sexual assault against a former senior politician on social-media site Weibo, her personal feed was censored.
That was on 2 November, and since then concern over her well-being and whereabouts have persisted.
Quote:
Some of the world's most high-profile tennis players have been asking about Ms Peng's whereabouts.
Novak Djokovic, the world number one male tennis player, has urged people to find Ms Peng.
Former world number one Naomi Osaka wrote on Twitter: "Censorship is never OK at any cost. I'm in shock of the current situation and I'm sending love and light her way."

An online campaign, using the hashtag #WhereIsPengShuai?, began circulating a few weeks ago and was trending on Twitter.
China has been reluctant to speak about the case, but foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, told a press briefing recently that China "opposes the politicisation of sports".

I think this post is the perfect illustration of the democracy we enjoy here in Canada vs a dictatorship. Freedom of speech, in Canada you’re free to share, criticize and comment as you see fit (even if it’s completely ignorant as outlined above). Thanks for proving our point.

I 100% agree, but the post I was responding to took the stance that we are the good guys and they are the bad guys. Simply pointing out that every time we spread “democracy” 100,000’s of thousands of innocent people die.
We obviously have freedom of speech and more freedoms than china but I would argue we inflict more harm globally than china does.

The systematic persecution of Uyghurs and other majority-Muslim ethnic groups in China amounts to crimes against humanity and genocide.

The World Bank estimates that 16 of the world's most-polluted cities are located in China.

The Coronavirus modelling experts suggest the number of global cases could have been cut by 95% if China had moved to contain the disease three weeks earlier instead of pressing ahead with New Year festivities that involve the biggest annual migration of humans on the planet.

Would you like me to continue?

As recommended earlier...get educated. How embarrassing for you.

How can 40,000,000 people in the 2nd largest nation area wise on earth with ridiculous over bearing multiple layers of environmental study laws be compared to the 1,000,000,000 all most all along their coast line from a nation with the 2nsd largest economy on the planet and zero environmental laws? We're doing more harm? Please elaborate.

I don’t even think NHL players should be going to the Olympics in the first place. Save it for amateur athletes.

Poor you!! you are so hard done by. My god everyone stop. This man lives under under extreme dictatorial rule. He has to wear a chin diaper and stand six feet from others! MY GOD!!

It's okay buddy. We will rise up and overthrow these tyrants!

You have no idea what it means to live in a dictatorship or communist regime my friend. Ever have your father disappear for two months and then be given 24 hrs to leave a country with your family on his return? Ever watch a woman and her kid beaten to death by police in front of a cheering crowd? Ever have to avoid unpaved roads and grass near your home for fear of landmines? Have you ever had to hand your new born child to a complete stranger in an airplane flying to safety in order to ensure its survival?

Shut the **** up about your fake self imposed suffering. Based on your statements I'm going to assume you haven't traveled much or don't have much life experience.
