That is my primary concern. Unfortunately for Khaira, to stick in the NHL he needs to bring a physical element. That is difficult to do with a glass jaw. Easy for me to say he should give up on his dream of being an NHL player, but it is something that he should consider.

I don't think I agree that is hasn't had no detrimental impact on the game.
I do think the sport is more proactive when it comes to head contact & contact in general & harm reduction.

I played rugby and you never tackled with or at your head anyway. Tackling was about wrapping up (especially legs), and not hitting someone down.

Nothing else in life will pay him close to a million dollars a year. Part of the problem is drs still letting players return too early. I was shocked how quick he came back after the Ritchie fight.

That hit on Mackinnon may be a legal hit. But man that’s vicious lol. Mcdavid is lucky he doesn’t get smacked like that. Seems to me McKinnon thought he was never gonna get hit ever because he sure skates With his head down there.

I played a bit as well.
I never said you tackled at or with your head.
But the ball and all tackle has started to disappear from the sport, which is too bad.
There are other things as well, but it isn’t the thread and my phone is small.

Yeah, this looks like a legal hit-no headhunting here.

I saw this Mackinnon hit differently. Trouba could have altered his path half a foot either way and hit the body. Two nights in a row starts to eliminate the possibility that he just a victim of circumstance.

Did he make head contact? I couldn't tell. If he did, then you're absolutely right.

Trouba is quickly becoming the new Tom Wilson.

Trouba is just trolling the NHL at this point, no regret for knocking a guy out yesterday, right back at it tonight.
I’m not going to comment on whether that’s legal but if Mackinnon is hurt and the hit is legal perhaps it’s time to remove open ice hitting.

The thing on both those hits is neither player was going fast, but both had their heads down, and Trouba wasn't skating hard either. In both plays he just lay the body completely square to theirs. The hip and shoulder look like they connect at the same time. The guy seems to be built like a tank to not have momentum but still hit that hard. I don't know if it's wrong but he's not late on the hits. You feel bad for the guys but according to what hitting should be this seems to be within the rules. Nobody wants to see guys hurt though.

It's within the rules, and guys aren't used to being hit like this. We went 4 years as Flames fans without a Flame laying a hit like this.
You catch a guy looking down, you drive in and up and catch him, he's going down in a heap, and "Oops I broke his jaw" too once in awhile.
This is very much Trouba saying "Oh, this is a legal hit? Great. Watch this."

We'll probably eventually see the NHL adapt a more IIHF style of call, where any head contact will be a penalty. No more 'well he hit the shoulder first and then his head, so it's ok'. It will be any head contact at all will result in a penalty, or game misconduct.

There's never going to be no risk. You know what fixes these hits? Keeping your head up. Targeting the head is never okay and neither of Troubas hits are that. But I bet you Mackinnon starts to keep his head up going forward.
I really hope they never change to some of the rules being proposed it sounds like some of you guys want to watch figure skating instead. Nobody wants to see anyone get injured but that's why these guys get paid millions because its a high risk job.

Separately from whether there was or wasn't head contact on either hit is the fact that both players had their heads down.
If it is deemed there was head contact I'm all for suspension. If it's just a legal hard hit and the player isn't aware of the situation then there should be no penalty.

To me it didn’t look like head contact in either case. I don’t think Trouba is doing anything dirty, or anything to intentionally hurt people. He caught two guys with their head down, and while the results aren’t something the league wants on Sportscentre every night, that’s not really in Trouba. He’s totally within the rules and doing what he gets paid to do.
