Game Takes: Sharks 5 Flames 3
- Flames deserved a better outcome
- Special teams at -2
- Vladar loses some magic
- Big uptick to the middle six.

Hertl is kryptonite for the Flames.
That guy is going to get paid this off season.

Kind of sad to see a crowd so small in that building. You don't get a great view of the upper bowl but there had to be less than 7k fans in attendance. Entire sections were empty save for one or two people.

Yeah there is a pandemic going on and a lot of people rather not be in attendance with tens of thousands of fans. Not really sad, just the reality of the world we are living in.

That's part of it for sure, attendance is down across the league for the most part.
But Ottawa, Buffalo (both terrible) and then San Jose in 30th isn't where I'm used to seeing the Sharks.
They were at 98% and 13th in 2018-19 for example in terms of capacity %

The Flames are a one line team.
Over the last 10 games at even strength
ELIAS LINDHOLM - JOHNNY GAUDREAU - MATTHEW TKACHUK GF 12 GA 3 Even strength ice time 24.2 %
All other lines GF 11 GA 8
3 lines killing time waiting for the big line to win the game
I think that the teams that play the Flames more than twice a year would be making plans to shut the big line down.

I'm hoping Coleman can break out and pot the occasional goal. I do think the organization was banking on him at last being a 20 goal player based on his output in past seasons. I think the Backlund, Coleman, Mangiapane line has been decent possession-wise but there's not really a playmaker on the line as they are all shooters and it's not produced as much as you would hope from a 2nd line. Mangiapane is having a great season but he seems to score no matter who he's playing with and Coleman and Backlund have been pretty cold offensively.

fair observation perhaps, esp as the Flames were pushing from behind. but they scored 3 (from 3 different lines) last night and had a 3-1 lead heading onto the PP
this was a choke

That's an NHL issue not a Flames issue though.
Did the five on five points for each team, ranking them in forwards in production to give an easy top three, six, nine etc.
Then I compared the Flames five on five production to the rest of the league's top three, next three etc in two ways.
Contenders - I picked the top five coming into the season, and then removed the Islanders as they've been junk with covid
The rest - the other 28 teams
Top 3
Calgary 43 points
Contenders 39.8 points
The Rest 37.4 points
Calgary in good shape with the top line (in this case its Gaudreau, Lindholm and Mangiapane)
Second Line (next 3)
Calgary 28 points
Contenders 27 points
The Rest 24.5 points
Calgary has a second three (2nd line) that's better than both contenders and the rest of the league (Tkachuk, Lucic, Dube)
Third Line (next 3)
Calgary 17 points
Contenders 18.0 points
The Rest 16.5 points
Third line ... still no problem, Calgary is only one point back of the contenders, and a half point up on the rest of the league (Coleman, Backlund, Monahan)
Fourth Line (next 3)
Calgary 9 points
Contenders 13.3 points
The Rest 10.5 points
Here's the issue ... forwards 10-12 are back of the rest of the league and the contenders. (Richardson, Lewis, Pitlick/Ruzicka)
So you're theory isn't all that sound to be honest, the Flames are a three line team with a hole at the end of the lineup, but they're no more a one line team than any of the contenders and actually look to have better top nine depth than most of the league when it comes to contributing.
Now clearly things will change. Mangiapane and Lucic on heaters, Monahan coming around, Coleman gets going.
But as it stands that's another whiff amigo.

Teams with the most top nine production in the top three players ...
Washington 59%
Edmonton 55%
New Jersey 55%
Chicago 54%
San Jose 53%
Vancouver 53%
Not a Calgary issue.

Does Mangiapane kind of skew the Flames numbers? I imagine not many teams have what is by far their leading goal scorer not playing on the 1st line. The 2nd line has two players that are still single digits for points in Coleman and Backlund.

I wouldn't say so.
Mangiapane and Tkachuk are tied in points, so I could have had either in the top three ... it sorted goals as the second sort criteria.
Either way you have a 12 point player (five on five) on the second line.
And the four contending teams second six (2nd line) have only 4 of 12 in double digits. The Flames aren't unique in that fashion either.

It's so weird that Mangiapane can produce like he has despite his linemates being so cold.

Yeah that's why I mentioned he and Lucic on heaters with Dube, Monahan and Coleman ... perhaps Backlund off to slow starts.
Will even out.

^^^ Thanks Bingo. I figured a lot of teams have top heavy production, but didn’t bother to look into it.

On a daily basis the guy hunts for doom and gloom, but what 80% of the time? just serves up a softball that can be driven into the stands by simple research.

Im not worried about the offensive production of the 4 lines, the team just has to keep playing Sutter's Systems and stop goals from going in their net and they'll be successful. THE reason they have been a top 6 team the last month is because their Team defense and Penalty Kill has been elite. That is the key and goes back to Sutter's systems. And stay out of the box.

He’s a machine and it’s all effort driven
He was leading the league in goals with Ritchie and Dube as his linemates
He’s effectively “matchup proof” and “poor line mate proof”. Really unique player
