I don't know what to make of the Oilers. For years their defense personnel have looked subpar and yet they've been their best defensively in recent times. I don't even know how they've sustained a decent PK. Maybe that can be chalked up to Tippett.

When I watch them I see a group with all the telltale signs of having the wheels fall off.

The way I see it they start off great because McDavid and Draisaitl are still fresh early, and most teams haven't yet elevated their game, so it makes sense that the Oilers start with an advantage over teams due to early confidence and game breaking talent.

When other teams ratchet up their effort level, attention to details as the playoff race begins to intensify, the Oilers lose talent-sustained advantage because other teams close the gap with their systems work. Then you factor in the slowly accumulating fatigue for McDrai playing every other night and having well over 20 minutes of ice time. Their initially great ppg pace slowly normalizes with the rigors of the season which means the team suffers as a result. The depth which is never all that great loses its offensive production due to competition level again rising. On the whole, that's why you see the drop off you have.

Of course then there's goaltending. Smith vezina like numbers last year covered up the issues we're seeing mount this year. Now they don't have it, so again makes sense.

I don't really know what the system is. I'd say they started well at moving pucks out of their d zone efficiently but now they've started their old collapsing ways and are relying more and more heavily on the two guys to drive and offensive zone time.
Great post. See, I love reading outsider stuff. Thank You. I agree with basically everything you said.

Are you really surprised? They're the most easily duped fanbase in all of NA sport.

Also the part about "we know hockey"...tell me you're young and from Northern Alberta without telling me you're young and from Northern Alberta. The misplaced civic pride from that region is super cringy.

You don’t care about our system as long as we lose… but your team is losing because it’s system is bad… so you want to talk to us about our winning system - which like us you don’t care about - to understand why it’s winning - again while you don’t care generally and wish that we were losing - so that you can???

You’ve lost the room bro.

I wanted some insight from one of the most hardcore fanbase man. That's it. We aren't losing, we are at the top, but it is not sustainable.

Oilers system is to put Leon and Connor out every possible moment so by end of February Connor looks like his body is decaying away. Stock the rest of the roster with cheap filler and hope for the best.

Haha wow stang has some hilarious takes in that thread. Called our defence a circus...bad defenceman.

Here we are sitting ahead of the Oilers with the best defence in the NHL.

I've seen no evidence that what I posted is untrue. They overplay their best players more than anyone else in the league and by end of season there is no extra gear. Whole team is built around getting special teams points and petitioning the league to call their games tightly.

If I'm a coach playing the Oilers in a long series, I tell every forward to lean on McDavid and Draisaitl and wear them down, I literally take any liberty that I can get away with in the playoffs because I know two things.

McDavid will quite. Leon will try to do everything on his own badly. I am telling everyone to not give McDavid time to ramp up his speed in the neutral zone. I am dumping the puck in and going after that defense because you know at some point, Nurse and Ceci will do something stupid. You can count on it.

We can talk about regular season systems all we want, because they don't matter much in idivdual matchups They don't change much from team to team. Sure line matchup changes but the system itself doesn't.

But you get a good coach into the playoffs where he knows he's playing a team 5 to 7 games in a row and yeah then we talk about systems. Maurice completely outcoached Tippet last year and came up with a Connor and Leon killing game plan. It didn't help that the Oilers relied on those two so much that by the time the playoffs came along there was no gas in the tank, but that's a bad on Tippet. His constant overplaying of McDaivid and Draisaitl is in fact a bad SYSTEM.

Those players on the bottom 6 might not be great, but they are still NHL players, and a coach worth his salt would find a way to utilize them

Instead they sit on the bench and see Conna and Leo paying 25 minutes a night and they stop caring all that much. There's no motivation to stand out on the Oilers or put in a good effort because you're not getting more playtime.

Here is a life message.

You are a terrible human being (You probably aren't) who spews terrible crap all over. You do it because your life is so sad and miserable. That is literally why you post negative stuff. It makes you feel good lol. That is the reality of it.

Grow up man. You are probably going through things. The crap I see you post just makes me think you are depressed. Go get help. It will do wonders.

I think having McDavid and Draisaitl so offensively gifted is both a blessing, but also a curse. Whenever facing any sort of pressure of needing to score a goal to either tie it or turn momentum around, Tippett does the lazy thing and loads his top line with McDavid and Draisaitl, systems be damned. So when that doesn't materialize in goals, you get two guys who are mediocre defensively (and I'm being generous), and it throws the rest of his lines out of whack.

It's just a mess of a system that doesn't work. Add onto the fact that their d-core is meh, and their goalie tandem is below average, I just don't see how this team can have playoff success.

Add to it that McDavid and Draisaitl basically have to play all out in the regular season for the Oilers to have success, come playoff time when other teams turn it up and players ratchet it up another gear, McDavid and Draisaitl have no extra gear to reach since they've already hit that in the regular season.
