I'm quite likely the biggest Sutter fan on this entire board. I'm not criticizing Sutter in the slightest.
It's just well known that Dustin Brown simply hates Darryl lol although he never would've won #### without him.

Treliving did "pass". Pass is very vague meaning Treliving didn't view it as a priority. If that gets you worked up for whatever reason, then be an apologist.

Yeah lots of stories how Brown did not like Sutter. I think Mike Richards recently told a podcast that Sutter wanted to take the captaincy away from Brown.

1. ‘Pass’ means you have an opportunity and refuse it.
2. We have no information that Treliving ever had an opportunity to sign Toffoli. Toffoli chose where he wanted to sign. (Unless you're a believer in that GM mind-control ray.)
3. Therefore, we have no information that Treliving passed.
4. Stating 1 through 3 doesn't make one an ‘apologist’. At worst, it makes one a logician or a smartass.

And the Kings were back to losing with Brown producing on the top line.
Maybe what was best for the player wasn't best for the team.

Apologist? Worked up?
I’m neither of those things. I just find it interesting that you wouldn’t want the Flames to acquire a pretty good player that Sutter is familiar with because he didn’t sign in Calgary when he was a UFA.
For all we know Toffoli had zero interest in coming to Calgary, I mean he signed in Montreal a very different market. I just don’t see why that is Treliving’s fault

Sutter was the one who did ultimately strip the captaincy from Brown in the summer of 2016, and gave it to Kopitar. When asked about his relationship with the then-Kings management he said,"I'm not going to say it's rosy". The Sutter years were his worst seasons statistically, and he began producing again after Darryl left. Safe to say he wouldn't want the chance at a reunion.

As Trevor Lewis said the other day, "Darryl gives you a role. You can take it or leave it."

It'd be pretty cool to see the Flames acquire Tofolli...if they could get Montreal to retain 50% as they rebuild.
1st + 2nd for Toffoli at 50% retained? Steep cost, but gives us this season + 2 more of Toffoli at 2.125M
Toffoli or Hertl (or both!) would be fun pick ups.

I’m convinced that the upgrade needed is Pitlick’s position and that Toffoli would be an incredible get for this club that would balance everything.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Lucic - Backlund - Mangiapane
Coleman - Monahan - Toffoli
Dube - Richardson - Lewis
Incredible group of forwards there and I really think adding Toffoli to play with Coleman and Monahan could really push this team over the top.

I doubt Lucic is on the second line for long.

Not just Brown. Articles after Sutter was fired described the feeling in the Kings’ room as relief. That’s usually the case with hard-nosed coaches. Players will buckle down and play under that abrasive regime for a few years, then they get sick of it.

Yeah, this is typical with lots of demanding coaches like Sutter. Tortorella is another example. Very happy to have Sutter back and the results speak for themselves so far… but no doubt years under a coach like him would wear on lots of players. Shows how hard it is when even players that got two cups in three years under a coach’s strict regime would eventually be tired of him.

Yeah we need to win the Cup in the next two years because after that either Sutters message is likely starting to wane or he is just plain gone because he doesn't extend and then we start over.
Next year is a real wild card right now though with several key pieces not extended, especially Johnny as the big UFA. At least Tkachuk, Mangi and Kylington are all RFAs.
As long as Toffoli and Sutter have a good relationship I sure hope he ends up a Flame this season.

Technically, the 2017-18 Kings had a better regular season (98pts) than the 2016-17 Kings under Sutter (86pts) so that's a bit of a sensationalized statement you've made.
I think that Sutter probably would have liked to see Brown's production return, but had pretty much given up on the idea given how unproductive Brown was in a bottom six role. It's not as if their top six was stacked... Kopitar was playing with some plugs himself.
The Kings' decline had to do with lot of things, and it would start with Voynov turning out to be a wife beater. The Kings basically lost their second best puckmoving defenseman from their cup runs. Willie Mitchell moving on being another factor. Mike Richards' sharp decline another. The Flames equivalent there might be losing Hanifin and Tanev permanently while Backlund ages out. They were spinning wheels with different guys filling lineup holes. They also didn't have much talent coming in through the pipeline.

Are you saying he might be this generation's John Tonelli?
Then who is Richard Kromm and who is Steve Konroyd going back?
Cup final this year and cup win in three years? I could get behind that.

But a cup win only if Toffoli is not on the team? Tonelli got benched in the 88 POs and signed as a UFA with LA for 88-89.
