How the hell did that team miss the playoffs with that kind of a start?
Losing 11 out of 12 games during January happened, as well as going 10-14-5 during December and January.
All the Phaneuf drama leading up to the trade and after pretty much tanked us. While he absolutely had to go, I think losing the (perceived) future captain of the team was a blow the Flames never recovered from until Iginla was traded. If that trade hadn’t happened I think we likely would have been a contender on paper for a few more years.
But I do also remember feeling that 09/10 team felt a bit smoke and mirrors during their first 25 games. Lots of goals spread out between the lineup, Bouwmeester was underwhelming, Jokinen had one or two games he played well but wasn’t at all fitting in with Iginla, and Dion was having the worst season of his career. It became clear we made a mistake choosing Jokinen over Cammellari.
Once the scoring from our 3rd and 4th liners dried up we were in big trouble.

90% of what she says boils my blood, but I especially wanted to throw something at her through the TV after her take on Gaudreau's shootout goal
"That's a new look from Johnny Gaudreau. Usually he tries to fake a shot and then go backhand. The Flames didn't have success five-hole during the game so I think he decided to change it up".
Gaudreau LITERALLY scored the exact same goal in the shootout against Pittsburgh just two games ago. Don't think he changed it up at all, Cassie...
God damn. I put the game on mute for the 3rd period and fell asleep.... Thanks Cassie...
Rewound the PVR and must have been dreaming for the Flames to take the shootout so easily.

The first line was really good per usual, but the newly formed Monahan line was really good as well. If Coleman and Monahan can develop some chemistry, look out. I guess giving Monahan some decent linemates actually helps (Dube and Pitlick aren't it).
I don't think the Backlund line with Lucic was very noticeable -- maybe it was a reward for his strong play all season or the switch to get Coleman/Monahan going, but I don't think Lucic really fits with Mangipane/Backlund.
As for the 4th line, Dube just seems all over the place and Pitlick is just there. Pretty telling they didn't see the ice in the 3rd period.
As for Vladar -- he was good when called upon and great in the shootout.
1st in the the West and tied for 1st in the league -- not much to complain about.
I am continually impressed by how well this team is coached. I was hesitant when Sutter came back but it is clearly paying off in spades with his game plans and preparation.

Darryl has the experience and knows what it takes to win. That’s what was missing the most from our carousel of coaches since Hartley got fired. Makes me wish Darryl was bought back behind the bench sooner.

I Remember that Kipper was outstanding beginning of the season, and looked the naturalstat trick that flames had PDO 1.029 in october and november. SV% 5vs5 was 93.26 ja sh%9.63. Rest of the season they had worst sh% of the league 6.44 and sv% 91.93%
