well, I don't know about the numbers game but Getlzaf went down so they need a forward in the lineup and are apparently calling one up.

Clague still has room to reach his potential as an offensive type, who can help out on the PP. Surprised he’s being waived.

Definitely surprising to see Clague getting waived. I can see some teams definitely being interested and putting in a claim.
Points aren’t everything, especially for a defenseman, but he has 5 points in 11 games so far this season.

The obvious answer seems to be to get Monahan & Lucic off next year's books. Lucic has been awesome for us this year, but mathematically you can't keep everyone next year...
Zadorov, Gudbranson, Pitlick, and Brouwer come off the books at the end of this season. Between the 6 aforementioned players, that's $20.5M coming off the books if you can move Mony & Lucic without retaining any salary. That could theoretically cover the salary increases for Johnny, Chucky, Eatbread, Kylli, as long as they don't sign for astronomical cap hits, and the players brought in to replace the departing players come in at low cap hits. However that still leaves the question of Toffoli's hit. Maybe Dube goes the other way in the trade, freeing up some space.
The only other possibility is to move one of the big 2 at this year's deadline. But with this team's top lines gelling extremely well right now, the phrase "if it aint broke don't fix it" applies here.
That said, finding a way to add Toffoli would be awesome, and would significantly boost this team's chances of making a deep playoff run this year. Make it happen Tre!

I think he was assuming a trade this year.
I actually think there’s no way Montreal trades Toffoli. He’s the piece they’d want to keep.

He asked "how do you sign Johnny & Mony" meaning he was asking about next year's cap situation.
How soon do the Habs expect to be contending? It likely won't happen for several years at least. Does Toffoli want to spend a bunch of years there on a rebuilding team?

I feel like they would entertain it, with future adds from Calgary's end, since they're doing a tear down of sorts.

Toffoli doesn’t have a say. And I think the Habs are first of all delusional about their chances and secondly even if they want to rebuild, Toffoli will be the low-cost vet they keep around.

I think Toffoli would fit this lineup better than Monahan but Monahan could entice them as a possible top line or second line C. Valimaki is the wild card, chiarot higher floor, lower ceiling but makes us better right now. I'd add a 2nd tier prospect like Phillips or Ruzica or a 3rd if they preferred

He does have a say. If he doesn't want to stay in Montreal why would the Habs keep him?

He turns 30 in April. If they rebuild (and that seems extremely likely), I think it's a safe bet anyone over 25 is available.

Yeah I know and I still think he’s the guy they keep over, say, Anderson or Suzuki.
But I agree, they don’t rebuild. When have they ever?

Not sure how I'd feel giving up a first for Toffoli, when a lot of posters suggested him in Free Agency not long ago and Tre passed.

Because he’s a good player.
Anyway, who says he doesn’t? He just signed a season ago.

i would absolutely give up a first for toffoli. it's going to likely be a 20th or later pick and the contract is good and lengthy.

You give up a first or more because you're actually kinda good and you're trying to win in a likely 2 to 3 year window. Not to mention, from an armchair GM position he fits your team perfectly.
I know many are down on Monahan, but hard no on moving him out until at least the summer if you deem that something that needs to happen.
He is under renovation right now and the big reveal will come playoff time. I think by then he will be a much better player than he is now.
He still wears an A and moving him could really disrupt a room in which many things are going right.
