Vernon get so little respect.

2 cups 8 years apart. And playing against the most dangerous oiler teams back then . Quite amazing . Smaller equipment and he wasn't the most athletic guy but man his focus.
I think most goalies back then were crazier than the ones we see today in gear that is way bigger.

I have all the respect In the world for Vernon.

To put it in perspective.....think about JS Giguere. Look at the difference in equipment....its nuts . He should have stayed a Flame in my mind as he eventually won his cup too.

I don't see any love for Hungarian born Levente Szuper (Szuper Duper) on the list.

Kipper and Vernon at the top for me. Most of the other candidates have too much feeling mixed into the appraisal. I can’t tell if goalies like lemelin, brathwaite, and tabaracci were actually good or if they had an ok year once and then I ended up investing a lot of emotion in them. Arguably lemelin did ok post-flames, so he’s probably the leader of that trio.

Edwards was the worst goalie we had who played semi-regularly imo. I was just starting to watch hockey then and even I could tell he was terrible.

I think this picture speaks to the Edwards era in Calgary pretty well

I’m working on my list but for now I’ll drop a teaser. Grant Fuhr is on it. But that’s just my list. My sole criteria is “awesome glove saves”.

It’s hard to argue with his record. I think there’s a few factors why he isn’t on more people’s favourites lists. He had a very stacked team in front of him for both cups, so it never felt like he carried the team to a cup. This was kind of evident in Detroit where Osgood won a cup the next year. Kipper was viewed far more as a guy the team leaned on heavily. His record in Calgary after the Cup win was one of killer goals going in to eliminate the Flames. Some very good teams got knocked out in round one. And he has a record of less than great interactions with the public. Not everyone, of course, but a lot of people were rubbed the wrong way.

Otherwise the list is very embarrassing. I have faith that Markstrom will make it a top 3.
Nothing about Lemelin was embarrassing. He was very good and would be good enough for any expansion era top 10 list IMO.
