Giroux isn't going anywhere, he is their Captain and the most beloved Flyer in the city. That is a for sure re-sign imo.

I mean if they don't acquire him via trade I would be pretty much expecting him to sign with the Flames as a UFA

I'd Krok before trading for this guy.

These trade targets are good, but I really like our current identity-that of a big, physical, hard-working team. These are qualities that help push the Sutter brand of hockey, and I would be wary of aquiring too many smaller, softer players. I think if Tre goes and gets any players before the deadline, they will probably have at least two of those three qualities.

He gets brought up every year so nothing new but Tofoli probably still makes the most sense. Sutter has history with him and Tofoli knows how to play in his system. Montreal has to be unloading him at the deadline you would think with how things are going. His contract isn't bad either but even better if they could retain a bit and he has some term.

What about Pavelski at the deadline? He’d fit the identity and be a sweet assed asset for a long playoff run… and UFA, so just a hired mercenary.

Jeff Carter and Joe Pavelski would be my top rental choices

I think it would be a good idea to fully commit to the Sutter brand, at least for this year. Then we won't be left in a position wondering "what if"
Plus, if the player fits Sutter's style, he's likely to actually be used.
The Flames are at their best when they have a definite identity. It might be a good idea to buckle down on it. I think it would result in a more consistent team.

If the Kings fall off their early pace and regress to the bottom Dustin Brown is a UFA that would be an intriguing add if the kings did full retention.

I wonder what he and Sutters relationship is like though. I think Sutter was pretty hard on him when he went to LA.
Maybe the Cups erased all that? I dunno. But need to get to the bottom of it before trading for him that's for sure.

I think a more likely candidate is the other winger from that 70s line, Tanner Pearson.

He had that one playoff run where he was absolutely brutal in-between cups even though that Kings team fell just short of making the finals that year as well. He was extremely useful in both runs to the cups they lifted with those teams though but I’d agree, the room is in such a good spot right now so any additions/subtractions need to be heavily scrutinized before pulling the trigger.

Pearson doesn't move the needle anymore. I used to think 'well at least he's a guy that doesn't lose you games', but his last season + in Vancouver he has definitely cost them games. Plus the last thing we need is another 3rd line left shot LW. Pass.

That’s a good point-Tre and Sutter seem to have good communication on player acquisitions, and Darryl has a book on every player in the league it seems, but If the situation came up where Tre picked up a guy like Fiala-is that a guy that would be scratched regularly? 12 minutes a night with no PP time?

I don't think Calgary should be going after high-priced rentals. Their prospect pool is relatively weak and they haven't been a consistent contender. Save that move for after a couple years of consistent success.
I'm open to the idea of a cheaper rental (Seattle might have some good options) or trading for a player with term. Toffoli does make alot of sense with this in mind, if the habs are willing.

Really all the team might need is a third line RW with some skill, to push Richardson/Pitlick/Lewis into a rotating scratch. Anything else would have to see a major roster player moving out, and with the success of the team that's not going to happen. These guys all jump out as UFA (or RFA in the case of Kravtsov) on teams that are willing to deal.
Phil the Thrill (costly) or Christian Fischer (IR) from Arizona
Calle Jarnkrok from Seattle
Vitali Kravtsov from NYR
Sure some of these other guys would be nice, but a centre or LW is logistically harder to place.

Kravtsov, Ninja Hertl, benny for what we paid jks, maybe P Kane, pastarnak as a long shot. Kaprizov if they’d move him at a long shot
Forsberg if the price is right. He can play lw on the pp. he could probably slot in at rw.
Kravtsov is my number one target. Sutter with that kid? Horosho
And he fits our competitive window with a cheap contract. Sign him to a mangiapane deal and that could help us with our other 3 lws.

Many of the pieces we liked in 2019 are getting their mojo back, and systemic weaknesses are being managed
Not interested in roster changes right now

I am usually in this camp - tinkering is dangerous when your team is playing well.
However, looking at the lineup, I believe that the 3rd line is providing the least, and still has lots of room for improvement.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk -- getting it done
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman -- getting it done, and I think will gel more
Lucic - Richardson - Lewis -- getting it done
However, Dube - Monahan - Pitlick isn't contributing as much. And they aren't particularly great defensively either, so adding a playmaker shouldn't be too detrimental to the 200 ft game.
Also, Ritchie doesn't inspire a ton of confidence as the #13. Adding a RW to the 3rd line, bumping Pitlick down to your 13th guy (or rotating into the 4th line), significantly improves the depth, IMO.

Apparently Bo Horvat has become “alienated” in the Canuck’s locker room. Don’t see Van trading their captain to Calgary, but he has Flame written all over him.
Former Canuck
Gritty two way center
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Horvat - Coleman
Dube - Backlund- Pitlick
Lucic - Lewis - Richardson
