That line is playing really well and he's noticeable on the PK and end of games when holding on to a lead as he's tenacious on the puck. His ultimate worth will show in the playoffs IMO.

His line with Backlund + Mangiapane is sitting in the mid-high 60s in every puck possession metric and hasn't given up a goal yet despite starting more in the D zone than the O zone. Backlund and Mangiapane have more chemistry due to playing together for longer, which usually translates to more points, but if they keep tilting the ice the way they have it's only a matter of time until Coleman starts producing as well.

Yes, but there is nothing anyone can do about it, that's my point.

His contract is what it is. And we have no idea what kind of player he will be in 4 years. You don't know. I don't know. Treliving, Sutter and Coleman don't know. So what is the point of worrying about it?

They are the next (third) iteration of 3M

3M³ or 3M cubed.

3M evolved

3M the white

3M's super saiyan form.

He'll bring a tenacious and physical presence to the playoffs and be good for .4-.6 ppg from the mid-six. Coleman has consistently up his game in the playoffs. He's made for hockey with fewer rules.

He's definitely in a bit of a scoring slump right now. But as others note the line is playing well, and the team is winning games. I expect that he's due for a bit of a scoring run here as the looks and the chances are there.

So if this team were to pick up a scoring RW at the deadline, would Coleman drop to 3rd line and maybe play with Monahan?

I anticipate he will pot some goals shortly. Only a matter of time.

The Backlund line is a matchup line. A scoring RW would need to be as defensively solid and mobile as Coleman/Backlund/Mangiapane to displace Coleman IMO. It's unlikely to find such a complete forward like that. Pavelski, maybe.

More likely a scoring RW needs to be someone who can play on a line with Dube and Monahan and actually make them a 2B line.

In my viewings of Coleman, he's just a player who does everything right. No off shifts, always on, cup winning pedigree, seems to be well liked everywhere he goes. He's also here for the long haul.

I know it's early, but he would my pick for Captain at the moment.

Agreed.

And that's why I think a RW playmaker might be more useful than a scorer. Dube and Monahan are both shooters, and Dube is good as the F1, forechecking. Adding a playmaker to than line fills them out

No I think Monahan needs defensively responsible wingers or else his line becomes a possession black hole. Maybe Dube can get there but right now if you add an “all offense” player to those two you might have a line that never has the puck.

If you feel the Backlund line is untouchable then you probably need a more complete winger to play with Monahan.

Personally I’m good with moving Coleman around. He is a smart player that makes those around him better. And IMO Backlund and Mangiapane can succeed without him.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler and Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland were not possession black holes.

Monahan needs wingers who can carry the puck because he has no ability to carry in traffic.

Phil Kessel or Glaude Girioux basically, are the ideal RWs for Monahan.

Giroux - Monahan - Dube could actually be a really dangerous line.

You have to play both ends of the ice especially under Sutter. Monahan - Dube - Kessel sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Coleman does something every game to impress me.
There's many clear examples of him making a massive defensive play to hold a lead or kill a big penalty.

The Flames have more wins & points because Blake Coleman is on the roster.

Judging all forwards on some points/dollar metric is Oileresque

I like the idea of non star players as captains. Lets the key people focus on their jobs and rewards hard working coachable players so as to set an example for the kids in the system that may not be future super stars.

At this point, I almost don't even care if the Flames never name another team captain so long as Sutter is here.

I think more along the lines of not making stars captains just because they’re stars (looking north). I am more about the captain being able to do that job - set examples, represent the team with officials and media, talk to players etc.

I feel like them not having a captain ADDS to their team identity. Or at the least, it doesn't hurt at all.

But personally, I prefer it.

I like the idea of 4 assistants. And you can rotate it around a bit and reward people.
