Pavelski is also on a good team...can't imagine them being out of it at the deadline

Giroux or Forsberg I think would be the two most realistically available rentals that would be good fits

Stupid Anaheim went and got good so Getzlaf probably isn’t available. He’d be perfect.

Wonder what sweetener they will provide to take him. I think they would have to package something significant for a team to take him. Likely more than San Jose is willing to give. Like their unprotected first round pick++. Even that might not be enough. His cap hit is brutal (even with salary retention) and he’s ran out of second chances in this league.

If we keep up our pace till the deadline I'll say the team will have earned a Forsberg rental. Normally I wouldn't advocate a move like that since the Flames don't usually look this good, but with gaudreau Tkachuk and mangi guaranteed to be locked in here only this year, you might as well. Your drafting position would be fairly low so its not a huge asset loss to spend your 1st, and you could look to recoup picks post-playoffs, such as if gaudreau's rights have to be dealt (praying not).

I think Anaheim could still tumble. But if so, I'd go after Rakell. He has no NTC, unlike Getzlaf (though Getzlaf might actually waive for Calgary).

Honestly, the best way to convince Gaudreau or or Tkachuk to extend, would be to win or at least push all the chips into the middle trying to win. Getting a rental like Forsberg would probably help a lot in that respect. As a bonus, you also get a few months to try and negotiate a deal with Forsberg in the even it becomes apparent that either Gaudreau or Tkachuk are not interested in extending.

What is Forsberg's adjusted cap hit at the deadline and how much would the Flames need to dump to get him?

I also like the prospect of getting a star out of Nashville. I think it's a good system full of responsible forwards and he's been there through a few of their playoff runs. He would fit in rather seamlessly here.

Also a good point about if worst case scenario comes and you lose Johnny, you have a window to negotiate an extension with Forsberg to help mitigate the loss.

Good teams who are serious about wing or competing for the cup usually get a rental at the deadline to help push them over the top.unless they're in rebuild mode.

Im not confident in Trelivings ability to do this but maybe with Sutter's input it will happen?

Sutter already talks about how they're low on talent and have to compensate in other ways.

May provide motivation for Tre to snag a rental.

But when it comes to Treliving, making meaningful non-tinkering adds is outside his usual MO so I wouldn't know what to expect. I won't believe he will do it until I see it.

Evander Kane doesn't need to just turn his career around he needs to turn his whole life around. What kind of idiot submits fake medical documents. It's not like he pretended to be vaccinated to the media while actually following protocol and testing behind the scenes, he flat out falsified a vaccination card and put his teammates, coaches, support staff etc etc at risk because of his arrogance.

Tree might add a rental with the stipulation that a deal has already been worked out.

Tree is always a big picture guy so yeah rentals don't fit into his philosophy of building a team unless he believes the team has a real real chance at the cup.

Erik Gustafsson, Derek Forbort, Oscar Fatenberg, Nick Shore is recent years. Depth sure but Treliving isn't afraid to throw away picks for borderline players near the deadline

Seattle retains salary for future considerations, Gio returns to the flames at trade deadline.

And if the Flames are at/near the top of the conference with a +50 goal differential in February, could very see him thinking we have a shot.

But yeah, whoever he would go out and "rent" he would have to believe he has a shot at re-signing too.

They are talking about high priced rentals.

Tre has never acquired a high priced rental, just depth pieces.

Jarnkrok has not been a fit in Seattle at all.

He is a UFA at seasons end
He is a right hand shot
He can play up and down the line up
He can play all three forward positions
He has always been a strong two way player (Nashville pedigree)
He is Swedish
He is Lindholm's cousin

This guy has Calgary Flame and Darryl Sutter written all over him

I mean if they don't acquire him via trade I would be pretty much expecting him to sign with the Flames as a UFA

In Treliving's defense (ew):

2015 Flames shouldn't have been buyers, that was a deep draft with talented players available at 15th They did add Sam Bennett for the playoffs, which made a difference. Adding Schlemko on waivers was a bigger add than it got credit for, honestly thought his play for us saved the season.

2017 Flames had their top six working to perfection - that was the year 3M was created and Ferland was scoring breakaways on prime Crosby. The best adds they could have made were on the blueline where they needed a defenseman to pair with Brodie. They barely scraped into the playoffs that year as a wildcard. The Stone aqcuisition was sneaky good, and actually the Brodie-Stone pair performed admirably in the playoffs - they had better underlying numbers against Anaheim than, for instance the Josi-Ellis pair did - and Nashville's top 4 was considered elite that year. So you have to give Treliving credit. Trading away 17th overall is never a smart move. Same spot Kyle Connor was drafted two years prior.

2019 Flames had the best case. We all wanted Stone. It didn't happen. Tre tried to get Zucker to upgrade on Frolik. Zucker nixed it. I thought the Fantenberg trade was a decent depth decision similiar to adding Schlemko in 2015, but I wasn't expecting Peters to scratch Kylington the rest of the way.

2020 Flames were bad under Geoff Ward. I honestly had to do a double take every time they managed to hang around in a wildcard spot while Winnipeg gained on them.
If you ask me that team should have been sellers at the deadline - they were not playing good hockey under Ward, they weren't firmly in a spot, and they hadn't signed TJ Brodie to an extension. If anything, keeping Brodie as an "own rental" was as reckless a decision as throwing away a first for a rental, given how bad that team looked. The goalies were about the only thing you couldn't complain about that year. But Tre still went after Forbort (good add IMO) and Gustaffsson (IMO unecessary, Forbort-Kylington could have been a far more balanced pair, but Gudtafsson did produce so whatever). The covid bubble was probably the only reason that team participated in the playoffs. I would have had them ultimately missing out if not for a worldwide pandemic, while getting nothing for TJ Brodie.

I think Treliving has said himself that if there's a deal to be made around the trade deadline, his preference is to bring the player in before the deadline to give the player more time to find chemistry on the team. Olympic break is Feb 3-Feb 22 and the deadline is March 21. Maybe if there's something out there, it happens in late Feb?

For the record I wasn't saying he ever should have. I loathe the idea of paying the price for high profile rentals. Such a waste of assets when it rarely moves the needle the way you want it to.
