I dont think Benning is foolish enough to trade Boeser in division, but he would look nice!

His job is to make his team better, if that happens in division then you do it

A broken down Monahan and a second round pick? Anyone? Hello?

Shinkaruk for Granlund, a 2nd round pick for Baertschi... you never know with Benning.
Maybe Benning would love having another young Finnish d-man in the ranks to replace Juolevi

Maybe a Hoffman type deal where the Flames sneak an East team to acquire and flip him.

Sure, but it’s a pretty standard operating procedure for GMs to not trade talent within the division.

Benning has acquired quite a few talented players within the division. Toffoli from L.A., OEL and Garland from Arizona, Schmidt from Vegas, and even Baertschi and Granlund from Calgary if you wanna reach. He's given up some valuable assets to divisional teams in each of those trades, too. I can't remember if he was the Canucks' GM when Kesler was traded to Anaheim, but if so that would be another key example.
I can't believe I'm about to praise Benning here, but refusing to make major trades within your division is dumb. Obviously you don't want to trade an established franchise player to your #1 rival in the midst of both your cup windows, but I wouldn't call Brock Boeser a franchise player

Beyond the trading within division problem, the flames don't really have or would want to give the Canucks anything that, IMO, fits what they're apparently looking for now. We have futures to give at this point (Valimaki included.)

Matthew Tkachuk, 16.5% retained salary for Brock Boeser + Canucks 2023 unprotected 1st
Vancouver gets the better player, Calgary gets the better contract moving forward and balances out their top six handedness a little.
The other thing I'd like about this is that Boeser isn't the most fleet of foot, so he's a natural Tkachuk replacement. What I mean by that is that you can only have so many slower players in your top nine. One or two is probably fine. Replacing a guy like Dube with Boeser makes you a slow team though.

For that matter, it was Treliving who traded Granlund and Baertschi and of course, in a trade for picks it's the guy giving up the players who risks some sort of PR backlash if the said player shines. Treliving also traded with the Oilers, FWIW, and while the trade wasn't of what you would call talented players, it was high profile. He's also traded with LA and the Coyotes (who were in the division) a fair bit. Traded with Seattle this year.
I agree that trades within the division are less rare than people think and also the effect is way overrated.

I don't hate it mainly because it's a poison pill and Tkachuk will walk from there in a heartbeat.

Paying Boeser ~6M-7M allows the team to be better next year than paying Tkachuk >9.5M.
As a righty, Boeser brings a lot of balance to the PP that is currently lacking
The Canucks' Unprotected 1st is also hardly an insignificant piece.

If flames were after a Canuck it would be Miller not Boeser . Miller has Sutter style written all over him.

THIS year matters. We're a winning club this year. Losing Tkachuk this year makes us a worse team with less of a chance to win the cup. The goal is to win the cup this year.
I get the appeal of fantasy hockey and long term building, but when you have success like this you bottle it and shoot for the moon. Hang the plans for next year! deal with that when it comes up.

Remember that time when the Canucks selected Olli Juolevi ahead of Tkachuk in the draft? Haha, yeah. Good times.
