I also love the idea of Carter. He's not speedy though, so unsure how much we would want him playing with Monahan for example.

Jagr-esque, in that we would do really well mentoring a couple of speedy younger players. Dube-Carter-Mangiapane, anybody?

Darryl Sutter driving out to Kenora, Ontario to find Mike Richards on his boat, to talk him into coming back to be his alternate fourth line center.

This is the CBC television comedy I need in my life.

Patrice Bergeron is a UFA this summer. That would be an insane rental to pick up. I doubt Boston is in seller mode but you never know.

That's my issue with Carter. If the Flames are going to add, I would like to see a speedy RW to compliment Monahan and Dube.

Carter fills all lot of boxes though (other than the speed thing)

imagine...

Lucic - Bergeron - Phillips/Coronato

and then bring Krejci out of retirement

Dube-Krejci-Monahan

as your botton six

Not just speedy, but it needs to be a real passfirst player because Monahan and Dube are moreso finishers. Can Kessel still skate?

You need to share some of whatever you're smoking with the rest of us.

I was doing the rental cruise through capfriendly yesterday.

Carter popped up, but I like the rest of these more:

1. Pavelski
2. Radulov
3. Phil the Thrill
4. Gio

I do expect that the Flames will be counting on their scouts to have a few mid 20's off the board picks ready to target. They were all over Zucker in the past for instance.

y'know i hadn't paid attention to his stats over the last 3 seasons in AZ and I see he has stopped shooting as much. But before that this definitely wasn't the case, Kessel was picking up assists based off of people putting in rebounds of his shots, which he clipped off at absurd rates.

No, Kessel just created a lot of offense period, whether it was shots, rebounds, or passes through the crease in transition. Of course he's most known for his wrister and his (former??) speed but he could easily feed a guy like Monahan. Just look back at all the goals Tyler Bozak used to pick up.

And maybe Kessel isn't "pass first" the way Alex Tanguay is, but he's still primarily a playmaker.

Perhaps Treliving is willing to try something different given the track record of his past moves. We have a coach with one year left on his deal after this season and no idea how long he wants to keep doing this. We have a ton of new contracts that need to be negotiated before next year. This is a win now situation seems to me.

If this team keeps playing as well as they are and his only in season move is to bring in fringe NHLers for depth, expect more incessant whining and rightly so.

Kessel’s always been an underrated passer because of his early sniping.

That said, I don’t think he’s the answer. I also am not sure Monahan plays that well with guys who are really fast. Johnny was one thing because he is quick and elusive as opposed to just beating guys with speed like Dube maybe could. I’ve come around to thinking matching the pace is maybe better. I could see Monahan, Lucic and another decent two way offensive guy creating a bit of third line offence. Monahan Lucic and Dube might work better than Monahan Dube and Pitlick.

If we're operating on the assumptions that

i) Dube-Monahan-Kessel would be a line
ii) Phil Kessel can still skate fast

then I don't think it's really important where Monahan fits. Kessel's always played with some centres who actually have a similar playstyle to Monahan (Tyler Bozak, Nick Bonino) and opposite some quality wingers (JVR, Carl Hagelin). If Monahan is your centre, what's most important isn't how effective he is, but how much you can take the puck out of his hands when leaving the D zone. That's where Monahan and Gaudreau worked so well, because Gaudreau handled the majority of the breakouts off of a 30-foot pass from Monahan. Can Dube be Carl Hagelin for us? He has the speed, and in the past he's had some good play defensively too.

All signs keep pointing me to Kravstov. Offensive spark, and future lineup ability. My money is on him being a Flame.

Well, Kessel does love to carry. He’s not on a great contract even as a rental. Cap retention would be needed and even then Calgary might have to lighten the load some.

I sure dislike the idea of a rental (and I doubt he’s one of those guys who’d hang around on a year to year basis for low dollars). He’d cost a first plus a depth guy.

If Arizona retains $637.5k of actual dollar salary, because of his signing bonus already being paid, plus Toronto's 15% retained, this actually leaves kessel with a 3.4M cap hit to whoever gets him.

I forgot he was already partly retained. That improves things.
