Uh....wow?

I would've guessed that kind of spread, but that's amazing.

So, exactly the same.

In 2018-19, after 19 games, the Flames' goal differential was zero.

This year, it's also zero… give or take a bit of dyslexia.

really enjoyed Greg Millen on colour during this roadtrip. I like Hrudey, but Millen did a nice job filling in.

It was nice hearing him discover some things about the Flames he likely didn’t pay as much attention to previously

Ziggy Lidstrom must be crapping his pants with all these goals the Flames are scoring.

To make his prediction of the Flames scoring less than 200 goals come true, the Flames would need to score at a 2.16 GF/GP pace for the rest of the season.

Poor guy.

Take away the seven shutouts, and this is still a team that lets in too many goals.

But seriously I don't think the coach's choice between two or three guys for defenseman #6 was the driving force in changing the entire team's entire play towards boring and ineffective.
It was more than that.

The Flames started to overvalue Andersson on the bottom pair even though he was playing unimpressively. He got promoted to the Gio pair and was surprisingly solid against some lotto teams like Anaheim and Arizona, but this affected the team style of play.

Peters started playing mindgames with Brodie. That's your defenseman #2 being replaced on your top pair by a guy who is probably playing at the level of a #5-6 defenseman that year.

The blueline went from one of the fastest (both in terms of defensive foot speed and in terms of offensive playmaking from the backend) in the league with around 22 minutes of Brodie, 20 of Hanifin, and 13ish of Kylington, all on separate pairs to around 16ish minutes of Brodie and 20 of Hanifin.

That's a net loss of around a period worth of non-PP1 icetime lost to more static players.

It's easy to dismiss, but it was evident back then, and it was evident last year when we lost Brodie to UFA (even though Tanev is not a bad player) and continued to forcefeed Nesterov. And it's overwhelmingly evident this year with the readdition of Kylington how much having players like that helps the team's style of play. They played for Sutter last year too, but never looked this good even with Giordano.

The Flames are second in the league in GA, and played 3 more games than the Hurricanes. Maybe the Flames don't score enough for your liking?

Or is less words it wasn't the Fantenberg Aquisition.

That was a Sutter masterpiece.

Great defensive zone coverage, short gaps in the neutral zone, and taking advantage of the scoring opportunities.

This season, our best players have been out playing the other teams best players -- this obviously leads to a higher chance of winning the games. But that not only includes our top players (Johnny, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Tanev, Markstrom), but also the new wave of younger players (Eatbread, Andersson, Kylington, Vladar).

I think Millen has settled in really nicely, and I much prefer him to the Hrudey of the last year or two.

The thing I like most about Millen, is that he sticks to what he is there for: he talks about the game. And he talks about both teams. And most importantly, he lets the game dictate the narrative, instead of trying to overlay his own.

Maybe it’s just my way of consoling myself because we don’t have a McDavid type player, but I love that the ‘top player’ definition on this team is so difficult to define because there are a ton of really solid but different players. Any given game, at least a few of them are feeling it

Yeah, I cannot say enough about this.

I love the chemistry that Ball and Hrudey have together, but Millen provided a whole new layer of really competent analysis to go along with a very accessible demeanor.

It was very surprising to me, as a long-time sharp critic of Millen's work.

Crapping my pants? Hardly. If they beat my prediction, great. I want this franchise to excel. We have had a pretty soft schedule so far: covid, injuries and lesser quality of competition. Yet, they are winning these games. The way they are winning is showing a lot about this team’s will to improve under sutter’s guidance.

I still stand by my prediction. I have to. Otherwise I’d be a worm. If it comes to pass then what? Do I call you out? Man I could give a rats @$$. And geez this place is a real hotbed for retaliation. The years of mediocrity have turned this fan base into a real fragile group.

I’m still happy to watch this group progress, but this isn’t the same team that ward was coaching. Sutter is pulling all the right strings.

And 2.16 could still be in the cards for this group.

kudos for standing your ground for sure, and I agree its a long season
however (while its true we have benefited I guess a few times specifically from covid depleted lineups- although I'm not convinced Ottawa would have been that different regardless), by many metrics the Flames schedule has been around average in toughness and some (Sagarin) have it has above average- probably mostly due to the road games, the back to backs etc

one thing that does seem to be true is that the schedule by almost any measure will be 'easier' from here on out- however this is the Flames and in other years we know that is not a good thing necessarily - so can only hope this group (with this coach) will be different

The Flames may be outscoring predictions but for some reason it doesn’t seem like they are doing something tremendously unsustainable offensively. It’s not like they’ve feasted on subpar goaltending (like playing last year Ottawa 4 games in a row when their goalies sucked) or had all kinds of lucky goals. Their goals have for the most part come from solid 200 foot play.

Lol you used to post about it constantly and have been MIA...Flames haven't had a soft schedule, you can't be serious, they have had the most travel and the most compacted schedule in the league.

It's November and the Flames have 4 games left in the eastern time zone. Just be happy you were too scared to bet.

If by some miracle it happened you would call it out don't lie...you were patting yourself on the back after 3 games. We have post history here.
