Flames

Week 3: Markstrom 1st Star
Week 6: Gaudreau 1st Star

If the Flames keep having the best player in the league every three weeks, things should turn out pretty well this season.

I don’t necessarily disagree with the “pay him” sentiment. But what’s the limit for everyone? The absolute walk away price.

What were his stats?

I know this much: he has been absolutely flying the least few games.

The fact that he and Tkachuk still haven't been on the ice for a 5 on 5 goal against is just insane.

In four games, Gaudreau registered four goals and seven points with 23 shots on net, helping push the Flames to a 3-0-1 record to close out their trip.

Good thing he scored that empty-netter against the Islanders to secure this prestigious award

I kid, I kid, Johnny's been flying, but it hasn't felt like he's been peak Johnny.

I love Johnny, but the fact remains he is (a) small, (b) a winger, and (c) has little to no history of playoff success. He's also verging on being old-balls.

Those factors should put a limit on his market value, particularly if he signs something at or close to max term. That should bring the AAV down to the 8-9 range I reckon.

I would be really uncomfortable going over $10M.

Don't know the answer but it has to get done. I hope the Treliving cheerleaders are right and it's just a matter of working out the details. If not and Johnny walks for nothing this franchise is sunk.

I personally see the number being just under 10 for wherever he goes. I hope the extra year here helps him decide to stay.

So, thinking about it, my walk away number would be 10.5 (an extra .5 and an extra year)

Then hope the cap goes up so that 10 mill isn't a big deal in 6 years.

This is the best I've seen Gaudreau play; he's engaged at both ends of the ice and while he's not "dancing" like when he was a rookie he's more engaged than we've ever seen. No pouty whiny face either.

He plays a slightly different game now versus his first three or four years. But it might just be a more effective game.

speaking of the 5 on 5 goals against, NHL.com doesn't break it down anymore, they just have EVG for and against. And they list Johnny as having 7 EVGA - what is the breakdown for those? There will be some 3 on 3 for sure, but not 7 of them.

Also, where can I get those stats?

Well, if the answer to having to “get it done” is $13M, what say you? That may be an exaggeration but it’s not that far north of the numbers thrown around lately.

As I said my walk away is 10.5. If it takes 13 and Treliving didn't know this before Johnny's no trade kicked in so he could get something back then the team is in bad shape. That's the crappy part about where we are now. The flight risk is real.

I love Johnny and know he is the 'straw that stirs the drink' but he is not a 13 million dollar player. And paying him that much will hinder getting that true game breaker player that the team needs to make any noise in the playoffs.
