And just for perspective, Mexico was ranked 9th last month, and dropped to 14th. Beating a Top 15 team is no small feat.

On the formation front, lets just play the 2-3-5 Pyramid. it seems to suit our lineup best!
In all seriousness, it would be nice to get David and Larin out there at the same time. David is so much better as a second striker or even a CAM when he plays off another player.
I just don't see a formation that would allow all the other greats onto the field like Buchanon / Adekgube / etc

No one thinks this.
During qualifying rounds, there are weak teams in each group, however, the level of competition that teams face, varies greatly. No one disputes that.
However, it is none the less amazing that Canada - a team that has been a doormat forever, even in the weak CONCACAF - should suddenly mange to score goals so prolifically. Neither Mexico nor the US were able to do so, facing the same competition.
It is okay to enjoy a stat without trying to #### all over it, or all over the other people enjoying it.

Its not the other teams were racking up goals against powerhouse teams either. England had 10 goals in a game against San Marino, 5 against San Marino, Albania and Andorra, another 4 against Andorra. More just luck of the draw for the good teams in being on there. But having Canada up there regardless is impressive.

hahaha, and the likes endorsing that post, too. Enoch, often you make brilliant posts, but cmon - OBVIOUSLY NOBODY THINKS THAT.
Anyway, I think we’re at a point where Montagliani (CONCACAF), should be engaging Infantino (FIFA), about 4 qualified spots, at the expense of AFC’s 5 to 4.

Sorry, misread your post obviously.
Honestly, I read it several times as I was struggling to pick up the tone. Clearly I never did.
Anyway, glad we're on the same page, and much more so, glad the Canadian surge towards relevance continues.

Tough call.
Using current world rankings, CONCACAF has 4 teams in the top 50, and another 7 in the next 50.
AFC has 5 in the top 50 and another 11 in the next 50. So they are quite a bit deeper.
Yes, USA (12) and MEX (14) both rank higher than IRA (21), but AFC has 4 teams ranked higher than CDA (40): IRA, JPN (26), KOR (33) and AUS (35)
So 3.5 for CONCACAF and 4.5 for AFC looks to be exactly right, IMO.

Africa is the worst by far. They should not have 5 spots, and not even playoff. They would get destroyed by anyone in a playoff, including New Zealand. Next world cup will all change anyways as we go to 48 teams.

All good. I too, make mistakes (lol ). I meant CAF (Africa), not AFC (Asia).

Oh man, I totally forgot about that increase, but wasn't up to speed on the details; so I'm likely re-hashing an old debate.
An increase From 32 to 48; 50%,
* AFC (Asia) increases from 4.5 to 8 (population makes sense)
* CAF (Africa) increases from 5 to 9. (stupid)
* CONMEBOL (S. America) increases from 4.5 to 6 (meh)
* OFC (Oceania) increases from 0.5 to 1 (meh)
* UEFA (Europe) increases from 13 to 16 (kinda boned)
* CONCACAF (us) increases from 3.5 to 6;
+ 2 Playoffs
With the hosts (in 2026, of course its Canada/USA/Mexico, all 3 automatically qualify) What happens if one of them fall to 7th, then what?

The 2022 Chinese Olympic hockey team takes their place.
Still mixed on that WC increase. WC is an exclusive accomplishement IMO and with this change it waters that down. 9 African teams? Quick name 9 African countries.
Canada will almost have qualified under that format if it was in place this time around, with still 6 matches to be played.

Because FIFA has 200 members so 48 teams still is not even 25%. Euro is now 24 out of 53.
The women's world cup is also bring expanded, to 32 in 2023.

I'm old fashioned and I think WC should remain 32 and the Euro should be 16.
Qualifying IS part of the championship. Its why the tournament itself is called the World Cup Finals. You have to make the Finals.
But how can you say no to money? It due time, Euro will be 32 and WC will be 64.
While we're at it, I'd scrap the dumb Gold Cup and combine all the Americas into a 16 team Finals a la Euros.

Copa America to Copa Américas seems like the natural progression seeing as they've had so many CONCACAF teams participate anyway. A more consistent broader appeal would help enrich more people, which is what the sport is all about.

Rotating hosts too, so the USA doesn't have the monopoly on the tournament anymore.
Would be pretty darn neat to see Canada play ARG or BRA in a Final at Azteca, Maracana or the like.

This will never happen because Americans are the problem. The US always wants to host and the Copa America tells the US to pound sand. It has a 100+ history and they rotate through their 10 hosts. The 2016 Copa America Centenario was a one time cash grab and it sucked.
The US has only gone to the Copa America three times, they want no part of it, unless it's at home.

Did the IOC provide accurate cost estimates on the 10 day Olympics a decade ago? This would be 5 or so 90 minutes games in a single location in the city. Also, in the best suited stadium, one that was revamped for major world class events. Outside of the Olympics this is about as big and event as you can get.
