Nice spelling

Should clean up that drive by execution, just like Markstrom smothering his rebounds

You guys are still talking about this!

Markstrom has been elite this season and a major difference maker so far...there is no debate

LOL I hadn’t come into this thread for a while and surprised to see the train wreck it is.

Markstrom is playing great, it’s simply not debatable. He has had some easy games, also not debatable.

I will probably reserve my final judgment on how great a signing he is for a while yet. That’s a six year contract, he wasn’t good enough in year 1 (for whatever reason) and looks elite about 20% through year 2.

Wasn't there an argument this offseason that someone would rather the Flames have signed Talbot instead of Markstrom?

^ you look at those goalie stats and you have to come to one of two conclusions, either

1) the team in front of the goalie is largely responsible for the stats, or

2) the goalies are largely responsible for their teams' success

because that first list is a list of most of the best teams this year, and the second list is a collection of some of the worst (the exceptions being Georgiev and Ullmark)

No doubt it is some of each, but I think it is mostly the former - goalie stats are largely a function of how well the team in front of them is playing.

Note: I am not taking ANYTHING away from Markstrom here, he has been elite this year. But to put my point into perspective, in his prior 6 seasons, his GAA ranged between 2.63 and 2.77. This year, he is sitting at 1.77, a full goal per game better. Did he suddenly learn how to goalie, or does he finally have a good team in front of him?

When the Flames don't play great but still win, we can call them Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch because Markstrom stole them the game.

Markstrom has been great so far this year, but there is one trend that's a bit worrisome so far since he's signed here.

Home: 31 GP - 0.899 SV%, -0.24 GSAA, 78 goals against on 60.3 expected goals against

Away: 27 GP - .929 SV%, 3.96 GSAA, 59 goals against on 65.4 expected goals against

Small sample sizes and it might all be bad luck at this point, but I feel like for whatever reason he's struggled a little in the Saddledome

It's both. I don't understand why it has to be one more than the other.

A bad goalie will drive down the team stats. A good defence will help a goalie's stats. Throw someone like Koskinen into the Flames net and his SV% will be slightly higher than his career average but the Flames W/L record will look a lot worse.

If you really want to harp on Markstrom for something, I see two things dating back to his years with the Canucks:

1. He plays deep in his net (not Mike Smith deep). Which is fine due to his size and positioning, but he does it nearly all the time and doesn't really adjust situationally (i.e. PK, 2 on 1's, puck being cycled, on the rush etc...). There are times when he needs to challenge way more (i.e. the first Hawks goal last night).

2. He's a decent puckhandling goalie and he knows it. So he cuts it way too tight sometimes and causes bad decisions (i.e. the second Hawks goal last night).
