the people reviewing probably often forget to remember what age group the target audience is.
I'm still really looking forward to it.

I’m not sure where else to put this but the new Cineplex VIP theatre in University District is now open

Crazy that area went from no theatres at all to two fancy theatres in such a short time frame.

I think this is the problem actually. It’s a kids movie filled with nostalgia and fan service for 30-60 year olds. Those are divergent markets.
By all accounts it has all the lameness of a Transformers/TMNT movie, aimed at young children and selling toys but is also filled with call backs that only their parents will get. Except the story, acting and action don’t resonate with those adults and the nostalgia isn’t enough to carry the movie for adults.
The original did a great job of being aimed at adults but also appealing to children. Doing the opposite is much harder imo.

Interested to hear some verdicts on Ghostbusters.
It's crazy that even local scenery isn't quite enough to motivate me to the theater.
Chinook has a big GB thing going on in the main forum. Photo ops, people in costume and different iterations of the theme song playing non-stop (poor cineplex employees). Its just interesting that they think the enthusiasm over this franchise will be echoed by the predominantly young crowds that frequent the place. But hey, maybe they make a few new fans in the process.

In a vacuum, it was pretty fun. I'd give it a B.
Having the Ghostbusters name attached to it is what sewered it publicly. Then again, if it had any other title I'd have long forgotten it by now.

Why small-town Alberta was perfect for filming Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters: Afterlife
https://calgaryherald.com/entertainm...ters-afterlife
A really good article about how Alberta was picked as the location, and how it fit into the vision that Jason Reitman had for the movie.

You would be correct. I saw the movie this afternoon and really enjoyed it. Not everything works and it's not a masterpiece or anything, but it doesn't need to be. Overall it's an entertaining and nostalgic 2 hour ride, which is all I was really hoping for. I thought the story tied in nicely to the original films, and there are plenty of fun call-backs and easter eggs for the Gen X crowd who grew up watching them. Not to mention Alberta looks gorgeous. Beautiful cinematography.
The new cast is pretty solid, particularly McKenna Grace. And Paul Rudd was his usual lovable self. If the movie does well, I think they could easily move forward with these new characters and continue the franchise.
By the way, make sure to stay for the entire credits.

McKenna Grace was hilarious in Troop Zero, I totally didn't recognize her in Afterlife with the different hair.

I spent a long time after watching the trailer wondering where I had seen her before...it was in Young Sheldon.

I went and saw Afterlife with my 8yo tonight, she thought it was great. I loved it... it felt like a Ghostbusters movie, great humour, a few jump scares, visual effects were great. I thought the sound track was top notch too.. Nothing bad from my seat.
On a side note... they ran the trailer for the new Scream movie prior to the film, which was on the verge of a red band trailer... not something I was expecting to run before a PG movie. It freaked my daughter out. Took her till 10 mins into the actual movie to get her settled down because of it.

Just watched "Land" by Robin Wright, starring Robin Wright, which is new to streaming and filmed directly before covid in Kananaskis on the Eastern slopes. It's a little character study, and suffered a little from it being her first directing effort. It could have used a more experienced hand at filming the emotional core of the movie.
Not all bad though, it held it's own, but it's fairly slow. Fun seeing all the scenery in our backyard.

Saw that Pig is on crave starting next weekend
Watched it a few months ago when it was on demand and I think it's one of the best movies of the year, Cage's best performance in a long time, so well done

I watched King Richard on HBOMax last night, and thought it was pretty good and an interesting story of that family.
