The only reason the Saddledome is even visible in the Calgary skyline is that it's handy to take pictures from Scotsman's Hill.
Now, excluding the Saddledome, which is going to be demolished anyway… name one. Any arena in any other city, please. And don't hide behind ‘I'm out’.

I hope it actually ends up looking like this.
Is this the first time they've shown the East side?

Looks like trash. The 3D models only reinforce how little glass there is and how fortress like the building is. That east view from Scotsman’s Hill is atrocious.
If this was privately built I wouldn’t say a word, but since the city is paying half I think we got ripped off. I hope it turns out better than the renderings are showing but CSEC just took a massive dump on the city. They bullied their way into having that stupid parkade. It would have been better off as a community rink or to expand the arena which already appears crammed into a tight lot. HOK and Dialog mailed in the design and did nothing to compliment the BMO Centre.

This is why no design will be accepted from the outside lol.
I challenge the photoshop enthusiasts out there to drop any arena built in the last 10 years included in the view from the Scottsman Hill photo spot, and see whats's better than the Dome!

Why does an arena need more glass?
By definition, the building is very inwardly focused, and the majority of the building's use will be in the evening, so it's not not like daylighting really comes into play. The location and building height mean you're not really going to have any notable views from the inside.
The only real benefit I can see to more glazing would be to provide a beacon effect at night, but that can be achieved easily with exterior lighting effects.
Normally I'm in favor of as much transparency in a facade as I can realistically achieve, but it seems pretty superfluous in this instance.

The only redeeming quality of the saddledome is the view from afar. This new building seeks to make the actual human experience inside and around the building a good one. It will do that and that's 100x more important than a skyline photo. We have enough iconic buildings in our skyline.
I hope some people had the opportunity to tune into Calgary Planning Commission. If you haven't it will be on a video archive soon and I'll provide the link. It will give you a lot of insight on the design, what went into the review. It's worth your time.

Agreed. My girlfriend was consulted by the City on the design (along with most other significant developments) from a CPTED perspective - Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. As a fan with a vested interest in the new arena it was fun to discuss the plans with her. I am proud that the majority of her recommendations were incorporated into this final design.
I am very pleased with the plans and can't wait, after all these years, for a new arena to come to fruition. Well done CSEC and the City for making this happen.

The only reason the Dome is “iconic” is its roof shape which also has been the cause of other issues. And in fact was called weird or ugly by some when it was built.

I would add that the sightlines are very good. New arenas are pushed back quite a bit.
We will at least get more leg room in the new building. Bit the actual view will be farther away comparing row by row. And the fact our 2nd bowl hovers over the first 13 rows of the lower bowl will make the upper rows further back in the new rink.

Cool! Can you give us an example or two? That's an element that I know very little about, and I'm sure other CPers are in the same boat.

CPTED is about how the design can reduce the potential for fear and opportunity for crime and contribute to the development of vibrant, attractive and pleasant public spaces.
In this project, she had significant concerns about how the east and south sides were lacking (the corner with the parkade). Sight-lines and territorial reinforcement are important to give a sense that the space belongs to somebody and that the area has activities and people that can see the space (natural surveillance). The addition of billboards, art and making it look more interesting all help.
Landscaping, planting, lighting etc. also plays a part in defining the space. In this day and age bollards or other measures to ensure pedestrian safety are important. The flow of pedestrians and other traffic have to be considered. Even things like garbage bin size and location are factors. The patios on the west and north sides are important but the public sidewalks needed to be separated with clear definitions between the two. Who owns the space is important and there are subtle ways to reinforce this (choice of different paving textures and colours as an example).
Although we may joke about sight-lines and glass they do help make the space feel safer. Take a walk around your house during both daylight and darkness. What can you see and not see? CPTED is not just about door locks, alarms and cameras. It about how can the design of the space maximize a positive and safe feeling to all users.

My hope is that the entire area turns out great for before and after events. I was up in Edmonton last week for the soccer game and, us being naive Calgarians, all said we should check out the Ice District. Keep in mind this is a Friday night after a soccer game finished at Commonwealth and there was a bull riding event in Rogers Place.
Hardly a bar open other than a Boston Pizza that was an hour long wait. I assume a few were casualties due to COVID but we walked blocks past closed establishments to finally find a couple places that had really long wait times due to being the only places open. We figured we'll just go back to the casino attached to Rogers Place. Well that's been "temporarily" closed since March 2020. The entire area felt sad and dead. I don't care if you build a nice, state-of-the-art arena, if the first thing you do after a game is get a cab and get as far away as possible then it's an abject failure.
I know throwing stones at Edmonton is a time honoured tradition around here but, objectively, the Ice District is awful. I really hope the new Calgary event centre doesn't suffer the same fate. I imagine rent around these arenas is insane which furthers the problem but they can't just let the area die out (or fail before its even had a chance to live) like Edmonton has.

The east side looks much better from that new photo! Way less massive, more open to the inside. Hell they even put some people on the street this time lol
