Here is the thing though. Another first round loss and this team is giving Johnny a 50% raise for his 29-36 age years. There is no superstar coming up yet so the feeling would be so similar to the 2007-2013 flames being lead by an aging winger.
I am really not a fan of the situation Brad has put himself in and based on his history I am not overly confident he will do a good job of dealing with it all. Losing Johnny for nothing is 100% on Brad.

There is a big difference though.
Landeskog desperately wanted to stay in Colorado and was willing to take a discount to stay. While he wanted as much as he could get, Colorado knew he wanted to stay and stuck to their guns, more of less.
I don't think Johnny wants to stay in Calgary at all costs.

We don't really know the discussions between Gaudreau and Treliving prior to the season but if JG gave Treliving every indication he'd extend at a reasonable price, I'm not sure JG refusing to sign is 100% on Brad.

Brad is not unique to these circumstances all of his peers have had the same challenges. It is not a hindsight thing either I think you go back you will have a lot of posters and people stating this needed a resolution prior to that MNTC kicking in. When that didn’t happen it felt like a deal would of happened in the summer and nothing has happened on that front. What has happened though is many of the other high profile pending UFA’s have re-signed with their teams which has only driven Johnny’s value up in the market place as the premier UFA.
For a team that has not won in the first round in 6 years and missed the playoffs last year I think walking your best player to free agency is unacceptable. Brad gave Johnny all the leverage and he squeezed Johnny last negotiation when he had the leverage. As of right now this situation is all on Brad.

I agree Colorado also boasts one of the best rosters in the league lead by an elite center and dynamic blueline.
Johnny looks at Calgary and he is the best player, their second best player could be a free agent soon and there are no sure fire studs coming up in the system.
I don’t blame Johnny if he tests and walks in feee agency

Thing that I get hung up on is can a team even be healthy cap wise if they have to pay Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Mangiapane as wingers?
I think one of Gaudreau or Tkachuk is gone due to cap constraints. Hurts to trade them during a playoff run but team will be better for it long term. Working alright right now but giving those three another 10 million is going to hurt.

Maybe it might have been a good idea to trade one of those lesser wingers For a number one centre.
Oh well, the opportunity never arose.

The Flames are in a tough spot for sure. They pay the 4th most in the league on forwards already. Behind only the Leafs, Canes, and the Islanders, with the difference between first and fourth only being about $4 million. Extending Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Mangiapane would put us in first by a large margin.

That is pretty surprising. Zadorov won't be here next season so that's $4 million off the books.

I can't believe the Islanders pay the 3rd most for their forwards.
The Islanders are tied with Arizona for being the lowest scoring team in the league (but Arizona has played more games).
They must have a low of overpaid forwards. Or a lot of correctly paid forwards that are very defense-oriented.

Once we drop Zadorov our defense will actually be fantastic from a cap perspective.
Hanifin - 4.95M 3 years left
Rasmus - 4.55M 5 years left
Tanev - 4.5M 3 years left
Kylington - ???
Valimaki - 1.55
Mackey - 0.92
Even with Gudbranson back that's a competitive defense in the low 20s.

What is the consensus on CP of who we'd pick if we can only keep one between Johnny or Chucky? Assuming the contract for them is the same at 10M a year. I'd guess 80/20 Johnny to stay.

Well, as one of the people who said he should trade him before MNTC, I think you are misunderstanding my "hindsight" comment. What I'm saying is that, if JG gave Treliving the wrong impression and/or if there was no reasonable trade, you can't blame him for that. I'm just pushing back on "100%". it's never that black and white.

Definitely Johnny but I don't think it takes $10 million.
How many teams can fit in $10 million under the cap? I think 8 years at $9 million does it if he can continue his great play.
In off season I would have thought maybe $8 million if he was lucky.
I am getting pretty sick of Tkachuk the way he's playing. Very selfish.

A big factor is you could trade Tkachuk after this season
Also, Lucic contract is winding down..I still think he might retire rather than play next season for 1M

If Kylington keeps it up he will soak up that cap hit easily.

Easily Gaudreau - he's more consistent and more of a centrepiece of a line than Matt. I'm hoping for a sub$10M contract, and but for his hot start, I think that was easily achievable. In fact, if Treliving threw $10M at Gaudreau right now he'd be foolish not to take it. He could readily cool off or get injured and his value would drop quickly.

If we're talking 8 year deal I'd say you have to keep Tkachuk as he's 4 years younger. I think he has a better chance of maintaining his level of play throughout the contract. Johnny at age 35, 36 and 37 almost certainly won't he worth 10 million.

That is crazy they are spending the 4th most.
When you have contracts like Lucic, Backlund, Monahan, Coleman spending time in the bottom 6 it starts to add up.
I am still bitter about them losing out on Eichel. I think the future of this team is a complete mess as they scramble to try and re-sign 3 left wingers who are 3 of their 4 best forwards.
