On his present line I think Monahan’s role is to get the puck to Mangiapane and that’s just fine with me. He’s not been in his usual slot position because he’s been behind the net and in the corner a lot more, and Mangiapane goes to the slot. So he’s not going to score goals like he has before. But he may, with some more time together, get more assists.

I'm still turned on by the idea of a trade (if he'll sign) for Tomas Hertl. Big (6'3") center who can produce, and has great defensive acumen.

I absolutely hate the Sharks, and I used to think Monahan was better than hertl - watching games and checking stats and comparing them frequently. But now I don’t think it’s even close.

Whatever gets your motor going I suppose... I imagine in the bedroom your significant other talking dirty like: "Monahan for Hertl, straight up baby", "Oooh, should I add some picks and prospects to that deal?"

I'm a big Meh on Hertl. Injury history, questionable overall production (despite great underlying numbers) and impending contract struggle.
I share GPM's views; Monahan has been better lately and I think him and Mangiapane shows signs that it is working. I actually think Coleman is the bad fit with the two of them.
Coleman-Backlund should stick together to form that dominant puck possession line.
IMO we are still looking for a RW target. I'd prefer RHS but perhaps someone like Dadonov could be had inexpensively.

I wonder if Brock Boeser could be had? Vancouver is really struggling (to put it mildly.)
I think Boeser is on the cusp of being too good to deal within division, but perhaps not.

Sounds like JT Miller could be the get in Vancouver. On HF there are rumors there is a bad seed in the dressing room causing these issues and some speculate it could be Miller.

18 points in 17 games is intriguing but a poison pill is the last thing this roster would need so it’s something to consider as well. Cost would be interesting too, he’s at a solid caphit for the rest of this year and next so what would he cost especially considering we are a divisional rival.

Jim's not dim enough to trade him to the Flames. He will get sent out of the division if they are moving him.

Yea I totally feel the same about Coleman on that line I prefer how he looked with Backlund.
Dube is a guy that's a bit frustrating to me - I don't really know what he brings anymore other than some speed here n there but lately plays just die on his stick...

Agreed I can’t see Benning trading him in division and I would only offer up Monahan which doesn’t fit the Canucks needs or solves their blueline problem.
Could maybe see a Miller for Girard swap with Vancouver tossing in some picks because that is what Jim does

You would only offer up Monahan for Miller? I don't think you realize how good Miller is.

Wow I just went over and visited the Vancouver HF. Those guys are panicking. Some are even ready to ship out Petersson already.

I realize how solid he has been in Vancouver as he has been nearly ppg there. I am just saying what I would offer from the Flames but no chance the Canucks take it. Flames do not have a Dman they could move for Miller and shouldn’t be trading prospects and picks for a left shot winger who is almost 29.

That is just fans though.
Last season here you saw many say similar things about Tkachuk.

He will be 29 in March you're right but he's on a great contract that ends after next year so I think he still has a lot of value. I would give up quite a bit for him. He will likely be number 1 trade target this year and will get a haul.

I think you and I have different opinions on the status of the Flames. I really feel like this team needs to avoid sending futures for 28+ players that are due big money raises soon. I think the last thing this team needs is a left shot winger who needs big money in a year and half especially since the cost is likely our best young assets and picks. Flames can’t afford that for that type of player.

I would much rather trade Backlund and keep Monahan at this point. In fact, Backlund + Valimaki and a 1st for a young, legitimate top-six right-shot RW like Terry or Batherson sounds pretty good to me.
Edit: Maybe Pelletier instead of Valimaki... that way we can move Valimaki for a top-9 C if Dube craps the bed as the #3C
|
I don’t see Monahan getting back on first line through merit, I could only see him back on the first line due to injury or the coach trying to get him scoring again. It has gone exactly as I said it would in the offseason, Monahan doesn’t have the ability to create his own shot and without an elite playmaker like Gaudreau on his wing, he was going to struggle to score.
I remember asking everybody how exactly he was going to collect goals this season because he has very limited ways of doing so. As the poster “Young Guns” said, he’s still sitting at zero even strength goals. I personally would not be playing Monahan 19-20 minutes on my top line.
As for Backlund, his contract could be harder to trade than Monahan’s at this point. It carries significantly more years and he’s got a no trade clause on top of it. Mikael is probably worth more to the Flames then he is on the trade market because when he’s playing at the top of his 2 way capabilities, this team generally wins.
