BC Storm
Anyone following this? Massive rainstorm on the coast, moving west, has caused massive mudslides (possibly with casualties) and most highways into Vancouver almost completely cut off. There's 1 route that is a 7 hour detour, and it sounds like that might be a no-go soon too - and as of 10 seconds ago, it's closed, due to flooding, according to DriveBC. There is effectively, no route in or out of BC right now, from the sounds of it - Hwy 3 is closed east of Fernie due to flooding/storm, Hwy 93S has been a mess all day, people left Radium this morning and spent 10-12 hours on the highway, it shut down due to an accident, Hwy 1 is of course closed due to construction...it's a mess.
CAN-TF1/HUSAR has been called in for the slides by Ruby Creek, everywhere is flooding - Abbotsford, Chilliwack, there's been an evac called for NW of Princeton (Tulameen) and unofficial reports trickling in that there's been a train derailment north of Yale.
Holy Moses.

Bonkers. Not particularly surprised about Vancouver, but had no idea it was causing problems around Fernie and Radium as well.

I think the Hwy 93S situation is closer to the AB border and is a snowstorm. Starting to see a lot of videos on Twitter about the situation nearer to Vancouver.
My brother-in-law moved to Princeton a little over a year ago. Looks like he's moved from one disaster zone to another. He'll be so pleased. Betting he'll have a few days off work at this rate (works at a mine there).
This was tweeted 2 hours ago - that route, at Spence's Bridge, is now closed.

Highway 93 is one I wouldn't drive between october and march in a storm. The changes in elevation mean you can deal with snow to sleet to rain to ice, with lots of winding turns. Add in the aggressive drivers in a single lane that seem to desperately need to make it to Radium in 2 hours to relax in their time share condos and that's a circus that just isn't worth the hassle.
I've never experienced notable hydroplaning in a vehicle where I felt like I lost control, but I sure felt awfully close driving that highway in the rain.

I drove home from Whitefish today and noticed the water was high everywhere. They didn't get as much rain as other parts of BC. Can't imagine what it was like in the interior.
Probably would have been better if it was snow vs rain.

yeah, 93 can be tricky to drive in the winter for sure. had a few hockey tourny's in canal flats when my son was younger and even in light snowfall navigating can be a test.
also, the amount of gravel they throw down, anytime you can drive down that in the winter without losing a windshield is a bit of a victory.

Living it.
Considering I don't drive and only bike . Commutes for errands and work are awesome.....
Had to grab 2 weeks of groceries, ejouce 2 weeks of beer / whiskey , etc
Good thing I work in a high end shop other wise my new rain gear this year would total 1000 plus.
It's not just this storm but this year in general seems to be way worse than years before, granted I use to be in Victoria in a rain shelter but even there has seen higher than average .
You know climate change is a hoax so drill baby drill.

It's been a strong weather situation all autumn.
We've had 3 bomb cyclones so far, this atmospheric river and the rain hasn't let up. Also, all these nice new sensastionalistic media tropes used to fall into either "El nino" or La Nina".
It was known all year this was going to be a double dip la Nina year and this is traditionally what happens. Higher than usual storm rates.
Having said that, this atmospheric river is a new thing I haven't seen the likes of around here. It doesn't stop. Doesn't let up.
Vancouvers locked in now with all highways closed.
On the island, I'm guessing anything north of Langford is a no go.

Was supposed to work on a film set out near Maple Ridge today. Completely flooded out.

But the burn scars make the effects of the heavy rain worse

I noticed the conditions in Vancouver seemed somewhat more soaked than a normal rain, I guess this is what they were referring to? An atmospheric river? I had a Vancouverite tell me that wasn't normal yesterday, so I'm going to assume it was bad even by their standards.

This is like the 3rd or 4th weather bomb this fall. There was even a tornado in West Vancouver like last week.
I am supposed to heading up to Kamloops today. Looks like I might have to take highway 3.

Co-worker of mine has been based in Meritt the last couple weeks, saying the town's water treatment plant is now down/there's no running water in the town.

Is "atmospheric river" just a renaming of the "pineapple express"? I assume they are one and the same.

Good luck with that....

Highway 3, in both directions. Flooding between Cunliffe Rd and Caldwell Frtg (4 km east of Fernie). Road closed. Watch for traffic control. Expect minor delays. Detour via Dicken Road. Next update time Mon Nov 15 at 8:00 AM MST. Last updated Mon Nov 15 at 3:31 AM MST. (DBC-35094)

Just edited, didn't realize BC had 2 Highway 3's half a province apart, unconnected. Odd.

Yes. We got a 9 degree bump in 3 hours in Victoria on Saturday night. It is the pineapple express but this bought a lot more with it than normal.
