Richardson is not the answer, and Brad has to either be willing to see what he has internally or he'll be bleeding more assets at the deadline for a 4C

He had the second worst expected goals percentage behind Richardson who was dead last of any player including the Sens.

Wasn’t there one game against SJ when Sarich had the massive hit on Marleau, where CuJo came in after Kipper got pulled and CuJo didn’t let in any further goals. Not a shoutout but similar feeling to me

I am very happy with Vladar. Great acquisition by Brad.

I thought the scored flattered the Flames somewhat, a couple weak goals and Vladar made a couple great saves. Especially considering the depleted opponent, not the best execution. Gaudreau missed a couple tap ins and bobbled the puck most of the night (at least compared to his standards). The Backlund line didn’t accomplish anything. Still more to get out of this group.

But you can only play the team on the other side, and in this case it ended up in a solid two points.

In the sense of trapping in the neutral zone or "defending" the slot, no, they're not as structured as coaches like Trotz, Tippett or even Bob Hartley.

But that's exactly why he is a good coach.

He gets it.

The best way to defend is to get the puck out of the defensive zone, and keep it deep in the offensive zone.

Every shift where people complain about the Flames' lack of finish, Sutter is probably praising their offensive zone time.

IMO there are four aspects of playing the Sutter way

1) Backpressure from the forwards. Just because the puck is deep in the O zone doesn't mean your F3 should always be down there. IMO Gulutzan failed in this regard because he didn't keep his F3 high enough to cover for a failed pinch. When your high forward covers, it allows guys like (Leopold/Phaneuf/Doughty) Oliver Kylington to make plays in the offensive zone and not get burned

2) Tight gap control. Just because we don't trap in the neutral zone doesn't mean we allow easy entries. This is of course assisted by (1) but it also depends on individuals - Andersson, Hanifin, Kylington, Tanev - to trust themselves and trust each other and check aggressively. Once they can force a dump-in their partner can quickly recover. What makes the Kylington-Tanev pair especially impressive is that their dump-in recovery is virtually automatic

3) Strong breakouts. Sutter's utilized two types of breakouts here - D-to-W stretch passes to keep opponents honest, and D-to-W-to-C textbook breakouts through the middle. Our centres aren't great at the latter so sometimes it's not as effective, but because the former is so dangerous, opponents have to stay honest. What should really be noted here is that he likes his D to use their first pass. Some past coaches - Ward and Hartley, really believed in glass-and-out and it just swung the momentum entirely the wrong way. Even with guys like Zadorov on the ice, the Flames try to have their centre low enough to support a breakout that won't require glass-and-out. Glass-and-out = bad, except in absolute emergencies

4) Boxing out in front of the net. Our players don't try to block shots too much. They're always just trying to find someone closest to check, and let their goalie make the first save. IMO this is the way to defend without the puck. It's not always pretty to play this way when the opponent is really skilled but this is where 1 thru 3 come into play. And once they recover the rebounds, it's back to (3) and then back to (1)

It’s hard to believe that this one goal completely decimated the Sens entire franchise

And the thing of it is - I think their re-build will ultimately fail, for the same reason many others have, not enough truly elite talent. I like Stutzle but I see him as a front line player, not a franchise player.
I don't see Brady as being elite.
They have a lot of prospect depth and good pieces - but I think they will find they are missing that franchise player to really build around.

Good to see we’re maintaining our perfect record when we don’t allow a goal. Brilliant strategy by Sutter.

Wait until this person finds out that Mangiapane was drafted in his second year of eligibility. 210 players in the 2014 draft and 165 players in the 2015 draft were considered better NHL prospects than he was.

Never!

Monahan is completely washed up and useless. It is known. A game in which he scored two points obviously didn't happen, so we have to decline the W. Ottawa wins by forfeit!

Really great game by so many, especially Monahan and his whole line.

Gaudreau was a bit off but the rest of the team played well. Thought Andersson had one of his best games so far, very solid.

Great to be able to get to at least 0.500 on this road trip too, hopefully they can win the next one.

In conclusion, Sportsnet sucks.
