Seriously, comparing Cherry to Ed is a disgrace to Ed. Ed slowing down because of age, there nothing Ed can do about it, he didn't choose to get old. Cherry on the other hand, did not slow down on his bigotry with age, he got more and more bigot as he get older.

Cherry shouldn't be allowed to retire, he SHOULD be fired! And let history remember him as an effing bigot all his life!

I don't want to be misunderstood. I am not excusing Cherry. He needed to apologize and did not (at least to the extent required). Ok.

He is a staunch supporter of veterans and I think he has done a lot of good in that regard.

I guess my point is when you look at everything that's happened since, particularly bigots like Gruden, I wondered if Cherry was treated properly.

Some comments are fireable offenses.

I can't recall whether SN would have allowed him to continue had he apologized.

Anyway I was thinking about him when I donned my poppy the other day.

The only reason this differentiation can be made is because they didn't ask Cherry to step down earlier when it was already clear he was starting to get a little loopy. He couldn't even speak coherently for years before this event occurred.

You don't think Don's good buddy Ron MacLean and network people that worked closely with Don weren't privy to what Cherry said off air and what he was capable of? This was a guy that in the 80's and 90's would pick on european players that came into the league. A guy that grinded Brian Burke for having too many american players on the Leafs. We all know that. We all know what Don Cherry is about. Ron, Rogers, and everyone else were totally fine with what Don was as long as he was the golden goose. Keep him on air as long as possible and once he slipped up they just wiped their hands clean and moved on. It's disgusting IMO.

It's crazy to think Don Cherry was one of the finalist for Greatest Canadian.

Best CBC talent ever? You need to go watch an episode of SCTV.

I still don’t see what Gruden has to do with it. Most seem to think Cherry’s firing was defensible. I mean, you want Gruden to be more fired?

Edit: more in italics didn’t seem to work!

Rogers never cared if he was a ticking time bomb as they were only concerned with ratings. I just think it would have been better if they let him go and he faded away rather than keeping him on air as long as possible before the inevitable clash with today's social status. I'm sure many posters here have elderly grandparents that may not be in tune with today's culture but at least they don't get blown up in front of everyone. I just think it was a little irresponsible for Rogers to continue to milk him.
Oh I see. Yes I agree with that. I did misunderstand. He should have been taken off air much earlier.

Why even have finalists when everyone knows it's The Shat?

People forget that just a week before his final HNIC Cherry was already in hot water for laughing off this incident:

Die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Don was a product of a different time. That’s all there is to it.

He was entertaining, and I enjoyed watching him for most of his career - for several years toward the end, I found him Difficult to watch because he reminded me of my grandparents’ dementia. He was unfocused and had a lot of trouble completing his thoughts.

I wish him the best as he winds down the clock on his life.

What do you mean by “laughing off”?

It’s a fluke play, was he actually laughing at it or did he just not see a reason to reform the entire sport because of it?

Don Cherry was 11 years old when the Second World War ended, and he turned 18 four months before Korea ended.

I personally do not care.

He didn't rate a mention on Remembrance Day.
