This is definately a good rule. If someone is asking for advice then you shouldn't try to steal that trade away.

It has however happened that I'm negotiating a deal and another GM asks me for an opinion on a trade involving the same player I'm after. In such a case I think the options are to remove yourself from the possible deal, or at least disclose to the GM that you are also involved.

Yeah that is a rule I defintely follow myself, although sometimes I have to bite my tongue and wish I went after the player involved.

In all seriousness, I do hear a few quite a few trade offers that other teams talk about and I try to look at the team, and I'll ask the GM why he likes the deal and try to present my view on a trade and what I think it accomplishes for his team. Occasionally I'll let a GM know what type of package I'd unofficially be willing to get a player.

For example team A says

Hey Syl I'm looking at trading Bob, Steve, and Bill for Jose and Carlos

I'll look at the deal and say so that would be like me giving up Ethan, Josh, and Liam. Yeah, I'd probably part with those guys to get Jose and Carlos type of thing.

Generally, I have a rule that I do not discuss specifics of talks with one GM to another. I might mention "another GM is interested in Player A and B" but that's as far as it goes. If needed, I'll mention that the other GMs offer is better or worse than the current one being offered, but again, no specifics.

I usually don't tell anyone what I get offered from another team. At most I'll say OV ratings etc. I'd only elaborate if it's a "bidding war" situation and I'm constantly talking to 2 teams about a player. That was the situation earlier this season when I dealt Turco.

The main reason I don't is because the team who made me an offer might not want others to know they are interested, or willing to trade the players they offered.

I will usually say that i have interest from another trade and will tell the team generally which way i am leaning towards. However, i usually will not go into specifics other than OV and position.

This is not to start a bidding war or gain leverage, but I feel that it gives the other GM a chance to look at other options because they know where they stand on the player.

Only time i actually had a bidding war was when i put Thornton on the market... but when there are a number of teams interested (over 10) a bidding war is pretty much created.

Overall i dont think it is wrong to try and maximize your return by telling another GM that there is a better offer on the table, as long as it is truthful. Each GM has to gauge their own level of comfort in what they want to give up in a deal. ANd really it is better to know that you have been outbid, than to just open up the page and see the deal done when you thought you had the chance.
