Matthew Tkachuk Signing Watch Thread - Johnny signs with Columbus
I would think that the Flames are really wanting to sign Matthew Tkachuk for the long term especially with the great start he's having. Final year of his current contract and will be a Restricted Free Agent (RFA) next season.
Johnny Gaudreau will be an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) after this season.
I just think Johnny has been playing amazingly really and better than ever especially under Coach Darryl Sutter.
I don't know but I hope the Flames are able to re-sign both these players because if they're leaving here another team will get a star player for potentially a steal. Even if it's a high pick or picks there's no guarantee it will be a player like Johnny or Matthew. Same with current roster players and prospects.
I would think that Gaudreau and Tkachuk have to be in the top 10 players in the league right now or pretty close.
I really think there will be news about these signings here soon, because the Flames can't wait in my view and the longer it goes on the more likely we could possibly not see these guys here anymore.

Johnny is top priority and it’s a massive risk to our franchise that he’s in his last year without an extension. It should have been done already
Tkachuk’s 9 mil QO isn’t a good thing but it does make his extension less of a priority considering it’s highly likely he just accepts the QO. His contract is a next year problem
1. Johnny long term
2. Mangiapane long term
3. Tkachuk long term if there is cap room and he wants to stay

Johnny is the priority. I do not want to go past the trade deadline with an unsigned Johnny . As for Tkachuk , I don’t think he will negotiate until after he signs his qualifying offer.

Cap’s gonna start going up again.
If they fancy themselves contenders, they can’t let their two best offensive players walk.
Think they’d get less in UFA? I don’t.
Johnny’s getting Panarin money at worst.
Tkachuk’s qualifying offer is $9M.
None of this would be a problem if they simply stop paying 30 year old UFA wingers like they’re 25 on July 1.

Well TB has 3 guys at 9.5....they seem to do ok in the playoffs.
Not that i think either JG or MT are getting that much but 2 guys at 10 is hardly a death knell.

It’s rumoured to be going up to $82.5M next season.
If this team isn’t going to rebuild, both Gaudreau and Tkachuk must be re-signed.

A lot of posters (myself included) has probably thought this hot start for Guadreau is likely him being motivated for a new contract but after thinking about it I don't think I actually agree with that.
He did have 99 points in a non contract year and looked fantastic. I just think coaching and likely him maturing a bit after getting married has gave him a new outlook on life after a pretty disappointing last few years. Fans again in the building probably doesn't hurt as well.

I don’t get this. Can the owners actually go to players and ask for money back at the end of the CBA.
It’s not the players fault the owners didn’t push for more escrow. The CBA is signed and agreed to by both sides.
