DST clocks disappear this weekend as we "fall back". Do you think they would have implemented this fast enough where the clock just wouldn't have changed again if "yes" had won?

Why not? There's basically no planning involved?

No. They said the earliest it would have been implemented was fall of 2022.

Green text? Seriously?

Go talk to the guy who maintains the time zone database that controls all global time zines for every device that gets time from the internet. You think Microsoft is going to update their timezone file in 2 weeks just for Alberta? How about every other company that would need to do the same. No way would it have been implemented this year.

The referendum was only to bind the UPC to pass legislation to get rid of the time change. There would be tons of planning, coordination etc that needed to be done. The legislation may not even have been ready to present to the legislature. It may have taken months just to see a bill introduced.

I didn't think about that, actually. I just figured it was a matter of not changing and enjoying life. Oh well, moot point anyway. This weekend is the good time change anyway.

It's the UCP, so I wouldn't have been surprised...

I just don't know if that European mentality will never fly in North America especially the USA. I don't mean that to say that wanting to work less days means you are a slacker but reduced productivity will lead to gradual erosion of economy and power. Europe's world power and influence has declined based on it's economic decline over the decades.

I think there have been some case studies that show a 6 hour work day or 4 day work week actually increase productivity while reducing stress and increasing happiness.

I don't think the current NA work model is ideal from either an employer or employee perspective, but I don't think most are forward thinking enough to try anything but the status quo.

By that logic I assume she supports longer work days in the summer as well?

How in any sense is that following the same logic?

Her argument, the ways I read it, is work hours should leave some daylight before and after your work time. So when the sun rises at 5am and sets at 10pm I, as an employer might argue the workday should be extended so the same principle is applied year round. You can't have it both ways.

I mean they're two totally unrelated topics. The length of the workday isn't tied to the amount of daylight. Should people in the north just get a few months off, or work 24/7 for a few months?

I read her argument that the work day is too long no matter what season you're in. So I, as an employee, may think you have unfair North American expectation of a productive work day.

Problem is that North Americans are more materialistic. We want new iphones, bigger houses and vehicles and to do that we work more hours. If we could be happy with less like Europeans that would be easier to pull off.

Well the other problem is that people have bought into the idea that if they work longer, more gets done. That might be true in some roles and positions, but in others it's completely false.

It may be but the reality is that more time off equals less income and most North Americans will chose more income because the average person has incurred large debt.

Her argument is that the workday is too long. What both ways are you talking about?

That's only because income is tied to time, but in a more progressive way of thinking, it should be tied to productivity.

Spending $80k on someone who is more productive and happier to work for you is a significantly better invest than spending $80k on someone who simply spends more time with you... unless you're looking for an escort, I guess.

It doesn't fit all jobs or become a widespread solution or anything like that. But you are seeing more and more cases where people are looking more creatively at things like scheduling, time off, compensation levels, etc.
