It gives the system a way different look than years gone by. The upside is much higher, but so is the failure rate.
For example, Ryan Francis and Rory Kerins from 2020 are both smallish but highly skilled players. Both have shown some incredible growth that caught the eye of people observing camp. That is what you hope for out of late picks, and these guys are now seriously in the conversation of being legitimate NHL prospects, and not just possible minor league players. The guy that is most interesting to me from this draft is Jeremie Poirier because he is a such a strong offensive talent from the blueline. He's a game changer back there and just has to learn how to play some defense, which he has obviously taken seriously and committed to. In the past, he is a player the Flames would have passed on because of the major hole in his game. But they took a swing and it might payoff. This draft could be a very good one for the Flames in the long run. Same things apply to 2021. Whynot and Beck were surprise picks to me, and they have potential to payoff well. Sure, we won't know exactly what we have until they are a year into their AHL careers, but the fact they made people sit up in their seats and take note at this point speaks well for them and the Flames' drafting. Yes, lots of warts to these guys, but a lot to like as far as skill goes.
|
I agree with this point. There was a point where the game had evolved and the Flames were still picking guys like Hunter Smith and Keegan Kanzig who were built for the slower game.
I guess the point is most people overrate drafts until the players start to wash out when turning pro. Very possible these recent drafts turn out to be duds.

Tell us all about the 1st round prospects the flames have drafted in the last 2 decades that havent become busts?
There are like 3, and many around here are calling for Monahan's demise too.
Edit: there are 4, I wasn't counting Phaneuf.
Phaneuf, Backlund, Monahan, Tkachuk. In the last 20 drafts these are the only "hits" we've had in the first round. Two were top 10 selections which are very hard to miss (We still did that a couple times anyways).

Monahan could not get another goal in his entire NHL career and he would not be a bust.

Yeah, Monahan might be impacted by his injuries and on the downswing, but in no way can he be categorized as a bust.
600 games played 205 goals 443 points. I don’t know how anyone categorizes that as a bust.

Y'all I clearly agree with you that Monahan isn't a bust, I was just mentioning that there are many around here who might say so.

Not saying you are specifically, but it just is not possible to call him a bust by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm glad this kid is still Flames property today. Looks like he has potential as he's really, really good at the one thing you can't teach which is scoring goals. Hopefully the rest of his game will translate to the pro level.

Wrong side of the bed this morning?
Last two decades? What the hell does that have to do with the most recent draft success.
Sorry ... you want to embrace gloom today, but there are more than enough outsiders pointing to the Flames drafting well of late.
Was just pointing out the suggestion they might be duds isn't a really fun way to be a hockey fan.

I have a vasectomy scheduled in 2 hours 14 minutes. So yes, wrong side of the bed.
But I am also tired of this narrative. We heard the same #### in 2011, and in 2014, and in 2017, and now. Every three years: But look, our drafting looks like it's gotten better the last few seasons!! before everyone busts and we're left in the exact same spot.
It's tiring.

Just on this roster alone:
Tkachuk, Monahan, Gaudreau, Backlund, Mangiapane, Dube, Kylington, Andersson, Valimaki. Plus they drafted a Norris winner that refused to sign here which sucks.
If you can't see that the drafting has been better the last couple years then that's because you just don't want to see it.
In the 10 years since Sutter was fired as GM (2011-2021 Drafts) the Flames rank as a top 5 team when it comes to drafting by pretty much any metric.
Byron Bader has a great model that looks at this:
Number of Picks: 64 (22nd)
NHLer Drafted: 9 (T-3rd)
NHLer Success Rate: 14.1% (T-2nd)
Number of Stars: 3 (T-5th)
Star Success Rate: 4.7% (6th)
Issue isn't the team's drafting, it's that we haven't had enough picks. If there is a single reason that Treliving shouldn't be fired it's because he has actually set up a pretty good scouting process...just needs to get those scouts more picks.

Not hard to find value in recent draft picks.
Why would any fan want to believe they've been worse than they are when the team is littered with players that they drafted, and there's been several suggestions that the Flames have made value picks in the last few drafts?
What's the point?
Don't sweat the vasectomy ... I worked on my deck the entire afternoon after I got mine done.

But every person is different, so listen to your body, and it's OK if you sit on the couch with a bag of peas for a couple of days.

Should definitely be including Fox on any list of our recent drafting.
And I went to a Flames game the day of mine so I expect to see you at the Dome tonight.
