Make no mistake, if this deal is made as reported, the team is in big trouble until Eichel is ready to go. Based on yesterday's configuration you'd have Pitlick as the best RW on the team and a bunch of waiver wire fodder filling out the rest of the lines.

My only guess would be that you bump Mangiapane up to the top RW spot and find someone else to fill in on the LW with Dube and Ritchie that isn't a complete liability.

This is just primed to be a letdown and some folks here may never recover from the resulting blue balls.

I have a funny feeling that using Tkachuk to acquire Eichel is driven partly by wanting to re-sign Gaudreau. If the rumours are true about Tkachuk and his teammates last year, this ends that problem and also gives Johnny a true #1C for years to come.

Tkachuk wanting out makes it much, much easier to stomach.

I hope it's a case of they know their fate with him already.

I don't know how Weekes's brain works, but if it were me, the only players I would describe as a "former first round pick" in the context of a trade like this would be Coronato, Zary, and Pelletier. Valimaki is possible, but I'd consider him far-enough removed from the draft that it's not how I would define him.

I doubt Weekes used the term to be coy. It's more-likely that the Flames have literally told Buffalo they can have their pick of one of those players and it's up to them to decide.

That first game Eichel plays here in a Vegas jersey…

I think it could actually only be Valimaki, since the other three are all still prospects.

I think it is something like this:

Tkachuk
2022 first round pick
Valimaki
two of Gawdin, Ruzicka, Wolf, Phillips, Stromgren, Heinemen, Francis, Kerins, Poirier, Zavgourodniy ...

Why do people keep forgetting that RW Blake Coleman exists.

So much easier to digest if this was the offseason and Eichel had time to rehab.

If this happens - Monahan better step up.

The more I hear about this the more I dislike it. If circumstances dictate that Tkachuk is indeed done with the organization and won’t re-sign then I guess the trade is one out of necessity. The rumoured proposal is just to much though. Could really set the organization back. I would say the ask needs to be much less if Tkachuk is the centre piece going back.

You're kind of going bottom of the barrel for prospects. But at this price, that better be the group they're picking from, sans Wolf.

I love Wolf and he's been nothing but stellar since being drafted.

But he's still a goalie. And goalie development is weird.

If he's the breaking point between getting Eichel and not then I think you make that move.

You're going to be disappointed unfortunately.

On the basis of Weekes's tweet, it's not going to be two of Zary, Pelletier and Coronato. It was a fairly random list of the best ones beyond the top-three I could think of off the top of my head, but with two other former, recent firsts and an upcoming first, it would make sense that the remaining pieces are among the depth prospects.

Just a reminder that Dim Jim traded Juolevi for a couple of depth players.

Of all the things I'm worried about, playing three months without Tkachuk or Eichel is low on the list.

For years, this organization has been ultra short term in its thinking. Afraid to take a step back before taking two forward. Trading picks for mediocre players. Only ever acquiring picks when we are totally out of it.

This team is not keeping Gaudreau and Tkachuk in two years time. Taking a swing at an elite C is worth gutting out the next few months.
