The Rangers don’t have especially good players outside of Panarin and Fox. Their cap issues come from paying Panarin too much even though he’s good, overpaying Trouba by a lot, paying a 30 year old winger $6.5 for 6 more years, and maybe even paying Mika Z too much, based on his play this year. The $4.5 in buyouts don’t help.

I hope he gets traded to Buffalo tomorrow so that he can play in New York state forever.

If the NHLPA did not agree to it it would not be legal. That is how that would work. Dale McCourt tried this issue in the late 70's (a challenge to antitrust and the reserve clause, which is what your 3 year ban from signing a contract would be). He won at trial and lost on appeal because the reserve clause was allowed through collective bargaining. The PA would have a veto on any change.
As for Fox, this is a heck of a good contract for the Rags if he continues to be almost a PPG dman.

Trying to think of purely offensive defencemen who have been integral to a cup winning team the past couple decades. Schultz? But he made a lot less money.

You are correct. Not sure how I missed that one. Oops. I assumed for all the debate on Fox that he signed as a UFA. I knew Calgary traded him but figured he told Carolina he wouldn’t sign and then waited until he was a UFA to sign with NYR. I don’t follow these things that closely.
Upon further review Fox left Harvard a year early. So people are complaining about the NCAA loophole, yet Fox only played three years and signed before becoming a UFA. Yeah, this makes people’s argument over NCAA players much worse. If the best player to ever use the NCAA rules to his favour is Kevin Hayes, then I’m not sure any debate on the topic is warranted.

Well, that's the smart answer to give, whether or not it's true.

Maybe the NCAA is a better model than major junior hockey. If these players aren’t turning pro at the first opportunity maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe players should have to declare for the draft? Who do drafted players all have to be the same age?

It was the only way he was playing NHL hockey in 2014, and his only chance to enter free agency after two years. Of course, Gaudreau was always going to sign tha deal.

Fox is still young as is Makar. In time these guys will round out their games to be more like Scott Niedermayer then what they are today. Likely why these guys have both been given these long term deal.
One comment that Bieksa made on Saturday was how the final 4 teams last year all had big strong defenseman and good goaltending. You could say the same about the last three cup winners with Tampa x 2, and St.Louis before them with Pietrangelo, Parayko, Bouwmeester, and Edmundson in their top 6. Even the Capitals before that had Carlson, Orpik, Niskanen, Orlov all over 200 pounds in their top 6 with Kempney and Djoos both being under 200 pounds.
So you can have these smaller dynamic guys, but it would seem you need to find some other big men to surround these guys.

Fox has some of the best defensive impacts in the league.

Yeah, he's right up there. Rangers D-zone turns into a vacuum whenever he's on the ice.

Because it opens up a better possibility of him getting 2 big pay days.

Yup. Better to go for that big retirement contract at 30 than 31.

I’m not sure a one game sample size is the defining answer.
