Compared to the World Championships, it's nearly impossible to get confirmation who's on a national team's long list. The national committees are being very strict about this.

Why is that?

I'm not sure I see the value in keeping secret.

Kunitz got to go because there was a worry that Crosby was too hard to play with if you were unfamiliar with him.

But two years later, they figured out ‘just put him with Bergeron and Marchand’, and he led the tournament in scoring.

If he doesn't get selected, can he still opt to play for the Italian Olympic team?

got to protect fragile egos. Even announcing your top 3, means that the next best players weren't good enough be the top 3. Pissed off Patrick Roy in 2002

  1. Italy didn't qualify for the 2022 Olympic Men's Ice Hockey tournament
  2. He wouldn't be eligible under the IIHF rules to change nationality: https://www.iihf.com/en/static/5453/eligibility

Strong forechecker who can score? He could find a role on most teams.

Is there some sort of exception for the Chinese team? It seems like they would need a lot of Canadian-born players, like the Foo brothers, to have a someone decent team.

Well I believe, most of the Kunlun KHL team (including the Foo brothers, Brandon Yip, Jason Fram and others) was recruited with this in mind. You will see that a lot of them have been playing for Kunlun for 3 or more years to meet the IIHF requirements. A lot of them probably have their Chinese citizenship already.

I could see Ekblad and Bennett getting consideration though.

Bennett? SAM Bennett?

If a Panther goes it’s Huberdeau. Or Ekblad. Bennett has found his groove playing centre and he’s not getting in over McDavid, Mackinnon, Bergeron, Crosby, Stamkos, O’Reilly, Tavares, Scheifele, Point, Couturier….

As article said, it was about a month ago he was informed, so nothing to do with his play so far this season.

A nod, as should be, to his previous volunteering for Team Canada, and solid international play at the WC’s.

The, by then, overrated and also, by then, uninterested Derek Morris was on said list too for 2002 in summer 2001. And of course Iginla too in 2002, who was only invited to the extended list and that summer camp they had due to someone dropping out.

Not really. He’s a long ways from being elite.

Iginla forced their hand by the time the actual selection rolled around. Maybe Mangiapane can too.

Yes, the lists had to be submitted on October 15. The Flames' first game was the 16th.
