I get that he just won the Norris Trophy, but woof that's a lot of money tied up in a 23-year-old.

Woof? Much better to have that money locked up in a 23 year old versus a 33 year old

Better Fox than Seth Jones or Darnell Nurse.

31 teams would line up to pay a similar amount if they had the chance. Seems like fair value.

Clubs now seem to get no discount for the R in RFA.

I guess it all works out somehow. Teams stay under the cap and vets like Lewis and Richardson still find guaranteed contracts.

"It was always meant to be. I knew I'd always play for the rangers, of course I knew I would have to screw over any team that drafted me but I wasn't going to tell them that lol. And no, I don't believe in karma. Why do you ask?"

I makes sense that there are limits to the rights, since the team also has the right to not offer a contract for that full time too, while the player can't just sign elsewhere either...so you can't have it both ways.

But if the team offers rookie max, there should be some compensation for the team, they can't offer more than that...

Another possible way to deal with it, could be to have a defined compensation to the rights holder that, again has offered rookie max before rights expire--if another team signs that player (original rights holder gets say a draft pick one round higher than the player was originally drafted, from the signing team...if it was a first round pick, a first and second are given).
This where the whole reserve clause and anti-trust issues arise.

Its a pretty convoluted and complicated deal, but these situations are guided by existing laws and precedents arrived at through various levels of litigation.

Im no lawyer for sure but the reasons the differences exist between the NCAA rules and major junior are very much real.

One other aspect that doesnt get mentioned is that you can go play major junior as young as 15 years of age (usually 16 or 17) and start to get world class coaching and development then.

That would be next to impossible to do through the NCAA when all eligibility requirements are factored in, so you are essentially giving up 3 or more years of higher level development just to get to play college hockey.

2 very different development curves.

Yeah, that is news to me as well. It would be great to see a source for this claim.

A lot of money for a D. I like Makar better and he’s signed for less money (but less term). I’m a bit surprised they couldn’t jam him for a hometown discount considering he will only play there apparently.

The CBA? What other way do you think this could be fixed? Everyone knows it has worked that way for decades not sure why you think you're the only one who knows that. The point of the poster you replied to was that it should be changed.

And Scorpion's point is that it can't be changed to what that poster wants, because such a change would be illegal.

How? If the CBA is changed once it is up for renewal, how would that be illegal?

I get a kick out of the folks who stick to the whole "it isn't a loophole" argument when it comes to NCAA players.

Lol

Ok sure, the rule isn't different for them but the circumstances are. That makes them much more likely to wait it out and screw the team that drafted them.
