Went to Harvard, said F U to the team that drafted him and picked the team he wanted, came into the league like hot fire, will likely retire with $100M+ career earnings that he'll probably turn into lots more money, because he's got ivy league connections and he probably already has post NHL ambitions.

I hate the bastard, but damn, respect.

Meh …he helped us land the best Center contract in the league. So there’s that.

But also …he can go fox himself.

This deal is honestly a steal for the Rangers. But that team has an extremely questionable contract structure — particularly with Trouba, Zibanejad, and Kreider — and that, coupled with their lack of success with high picks, leads me to believe their future isn't all that bright.

I think Fox has latched himself to a sinking ship.

Fox's vision on the ice is incredible for a player of his age....absolutely disgraceful that the NHL has not closed the NCAA loophole yet though. Especially, as more and more players are likely to go the NCAA route as hockey becomes more popular in the USA.

At least the Rangers will at least have to start paying for him starting next season. Fox being an elite player on an entry level deal hurts a lot more than Fox at market value.

Funny that the Oilers will be paying Nurse the same.

It's not really a loophole. Teams have control over NCAA players for four seasons before they can walk. Teams have control over CHL players for two years before they can walk.

Seems like it could be easily fixed then.

What are we trying to fix, exactly? You can't force guys to sign with the teams who draft them. This is the way it has worked for all drafted prospects for decades.

I think we should force players to sign with the team who drafted them

That's preposterous and it would never happen.

Either way, it seems the problem isn't with NCAA prospects. So why do we keep calling it an NCAA loophole? Literally anyone can refuse to sign, it's their right.

Apples to Oranges. What's the incentive for a CHL player to do it? Live in Regina and ride a bus everywhere for two more years? Almost anyone that has the skill to do it wants to get away from that life asap

An NCAAer gets to play an extremely relaxed schedule and finish school, most former players talk about it being the best time in their life. Much different than living with strangers earning $67/week in Prince George

You can include a clause in the next CBA that players can only sign an NHL entry level contract with the team that drafted them, unless they are undrafted. They still have the choice of not signing an entry level contract with any NHL team. Otherwise, if this becomes increasingly popular, what's the point of the draft?

Edit: also what btimbit said.

The objective/goal is that they get signed with the team that drafted them. That is why there is a draft, and why there is a period of time where the team owns players' rights.

No, it isn't a loophole, but there is currently inequity between the amateur paths that players can take.

Changing the term to 5 years for which teams hold players' rights, would significantly level the playing field, and reduce the number of players that shun their draft-teams

I have faith that like most players that sign big money deals with the Rangers his career will now spiral downward.
