15,319 as per the Event Summary, doesn't seem too bad.

That was Monahan's best game in a long time, he was engaged throughout and had a bit of a monkey off the back look about him after he scored. Nothing wrong with him playing lower in the line up if he's up on the PP where his shot and positioning can be utilized.

I will be extremely happy if Lucic and Lewis start noticing when Monahan finds open space in the slot and are able to get him the puck. Lucic is a decent passer and is capable, IMO. Not certain about Lewis as I haven't seen enough of him.

If Monahan was playing with anyone but those two, he could have scored a number of times last night. Holy smokes he found the soft spot and was wide open almost every shift. Best game from him in a while. Looked good on him!

I'm actually impressed by how effective Lucic and Monahan are beginning to be together. Not flashy, but wily, and they are getting the job done. It just isn't going in the net yet at even strength.

There was one play later in the game, I think, where Lucic made a pass out to Mony in the slot. Unfortunately, Lucic rushed it and hadn't looked to see where Mony was and missed him with the pass. It's coming, though.

I noticed that Monahan has been gradually getting back to form and looks better every game. I don't doubt his work ethic or talent. His struggles are almost certainly injury related. As long as Sutter manages his ice-time and deployment as he has been, I expect Monahan to be an important player this season.

Deployment is Sutter's specialty. He excels at finding a niche for players.

This is truly amazing considering our roster.

Also kudos to Markstrom and Coleman tonight. They played great games.

Can't wait until Tuesday!!!!
I disagree with the suggestion that the roster is bad. Not singling you out as there are many who believe this, but in my eyes, while the roster is somewhat short on elite talent, there is plenty to work with.

No doubt the recent years of underachieving have cast the core of this team in a negative light, but I've never subscribed to the notion that the Flames lineup is anything less than above average.

Id been advocating Monahan on the 4th line for a couple seasons now, was scoffed at by quite a few on this board. Its the only place he should be and now he is starting to look better the last few games. He is not the guy you can give top assignments to. I'm fine with him on the PP.

I will repeat my assertion a couple of years back that hockey unlike basketball is a weak link sport. For those unfamiliar with the term, strong link is when thr team performance is heavily influenced by the star player, weak link is when the team is heavily influenced by the weakest players. I believe for a couple of games you can fake it by playing your best 30 minutes a night...but not over an entire season + playoffs.

I don't believe that the NHL gms have truly caught onto this concept, but for this reason Vegas was not an anomaly but an untapped strategy in their inaugural season. Vegas would come in you in waves of 2nd lines for the whole game. Calgary is built the same way and now with a coach that can exploit this...it is not surprising (although definitely not predicted by me), that they are finding success playing this way...

Rasmus Andersson has 0 hits in last 7 games. Is that typical for a top defenceman minutes wise?

Hard to get a hit when the other team never has the puck

In eight games, six points and plus ten is well above typical for a top defenceman.

There are different ways to separate a player from the puck. Hits aren't always the most effective way to do this. So a look at his advanced stats will probably be more telling than the hit count.

Rasmus Andersson simply looks at an opposition player and the player will promptly hit himself.

Hits are a notoriously subjective stat, especially hits during road games where the home team counts them.

Not saying Andersson is Lidstrom or Neidermayer, but I don't remember either of them racking up the hits, and it worked out quite well for them as I recall.
