and for all the Eichel lovers in here, why would you want the trade to happen now if he can't play? Isn't it better to wait until the trade deadline, so we can continue to use the assets for him right now?
hmmm unless it's a Mike Ditka special Tre is offering up.

Except that they would not be starting next season fresh, they would have to clear enough cap to accommodate Eichel's $10M salary. What they need to do is to acquire a player or players on expiring contracts. Or trade for futures and rebuild, but I think they have been too close to winning it all to want to do the latter at this time.

That would make sense, but I don't think it ups the urgency to get something done.

Well you would want to trade for him now so he can get the surgery and hopefully be ready in time for the last part of the regular season.
If you wait until the trade deadline, the Sabres still won't let him get the surgery and he would most likely miss the entire playoffs.

If you're trading roster players for him now when you already have that many key players injured, there most likely aren't going to be any playoffs.

Exactly, this is the point. It's just funny the way it was originally presented.

I know it would be within the boundaries of the CBA to do so, but I think it really works against the spirit of the agreement. The whole idea of allowing salaries on LTIR to not count against your team was to help teams remain competitive in their chase for the playoffs, and not allow an injury to a high priced player be a death sentence for a season. I don't think the LTIR was dreamed up so a team could hide a franchise player, that would put them over the cap, until the post season where he would then propel that team to a championship. I also don't think it was put there to hide a potential franchise player until the next season when your team is already over the cap and would have $17.3M in salary on IR and another $12.5M on LTIR. Allowing a franchise like this to ad an additional $10M to LTIR would be criminal.

I think it’s the opposite for Vegas…I don’t think they will want to throw away the season.
I think they might look more at acquiring a player who can help now to keep them afloat.
Moving anybody off the roster to acquire Eichel now would mean you’re really giving up on the year. And Buffalo probably won’t be offering much in terms of protection on that pick.

Knowing Vegas’s proclivity to fall ass-backwards into good fortune, they’ll probably have half the team on LTIR this year, draft Wright, and then enjoy a miraculous sequence of full recoveries to go into next year.

The longer this goes, the less I want to trade anything of significance off the roster.
There’s no point spending assets for a deadline acquisition who’s not going to help you until next season.
I mean, there is, but you don’t waste a potential division winning season. If we were projecting to be our usual 7-11th place selves, sure.

Why do people keep saying that? He would help you in this years playoffs.
So long as the trade is before say, mid December.
By Christmas you would start to have a point. But we're still in eichel can play this season territory.

But they might have great rehabbing chemistry. You could try putting a rehab line of Stone - Eichel - Karlsson together and I bet they’d all heal 10% faster.

Vegas also has the Raiders in town now to compete with and I've hear attendance is down at Knight's games as the fans expect a top team or bust. Probably makes it a lot harder to tank for a season.

I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect a player who hasn’t played real hockey in well over a calendar year to be parachuted into the Stanley Cup playoffs cold following neck surgery.
He won’t have had the opportunity to train, he won’t have had any chance to build chemistry with his line mates, or trust his body to withstand the punishments of playoff hockey.
Nobody is paying a premium cost to submarine their own season.
So unless Buffalo wants to drag this out and try again next summer, they should make the best deal they can for their alienated franchise player with a broken neck.

Kucherov says hi.
It wasn't a calendar year, but it was a season. He led the way to the cup.

According to ESPN's attendance report, Vegas has been at 17,965 (103.7%) average reported attendance through 5 home games this season. The building certainly looked pretty full on TV though probably not 103.7% full...

Well golly. You know you're right.
This is a terrible idea. I'll call Brad and tell him to pull out of this thing. The answers are in the room.
