Yup. 4 years at $10M for a 1C v. 1 year at $9M for a LW who’s a flight risk afterward. No offence to Tkachuk, but he plays a lesser position, hasn’t produced as much and has some question marks about his immediate future here. The only question mark around Eichel is health, and it’s undeniably a big one.
ETA: it evens out the money a lot more too.

On Paper, sure.
But who becomes your netfront screen / hands and deflections guy on PP1? Mangiapane I guess but he's a pending RFA himself (do we really want him going offnfor 50 goals on PP1 in a contract year?) and he's not as tall as Tkachuk as a screener.

If Eichel doesn’t happen, I am even more adamant in wanting a significant trade for the Flames in season. Clearly they have something good going here so let’s not be afraid to do something.
If I hear that “this group deserves to show what they can do in the playoffs” I will lose my mind. Obviously the coach has been a huge add but let’s give him even more to work with. Not more depth on D.

I don’t know - maybe you don’t play the same power play, maybe Lucic does that job, maybe Mangiapane. And if Mangiapane scores 50 - awwww gee, that’s a real shame.
I’m not scuttling that trade because I’m worried about one spot on the power play.

Wow the more and more I hear of what people are suggesting for Eichel the more and more I am firmly hoping we DO NOT do it. Please Brad. Don’t get caught up in the insanity. Mortgaging the farm for a player with a broken neck is just insanity.
