I'm just trying to come to terms with the eventual "close, but just couldn't get it done" early, so I'm less crushed.

No one, that account is associated with that new ScorchStack newsletter. Basically just another enthusiastic Flames fan
"The Mayor" is John Hoven, who is connected with the Kings and Ducks. Not the same thing

Treliving worked out the framework of a deal, then got permission to speak to Stone's camp about the appetite for an extension.
There was none, so Calgary bows out and Ottawa takes Vegas' package and Stone signs immediately long term.
That's more or less how it went down, from what I could gather.
Not dumb at all. Just how the chips fell.

No, no.
It is MUCH more believable that Treliving knew well in advance—without ever speaking to Ottawa management or Michael Stone himself—that Stone was determined to not sign in Calgary, and then he went ahead and spent days putting together the framework for a deal that would never get done, anyways. Come on, this is a much more credible story.

From my recollection, the big thing was that Treliving was insisting on the D piece going out being Oliver Kylington, whereas Vegas was offering Brannstrom. Ottawa wanted Valimaki, and Tre refused to move Valimaki because he saw a Giordano replacement in Valimaki.
Considering his brother literally lives here fulltime, I doubt Calgary was such an unattractive destination for Stone as it's being painted as.

I think there was the fact the Flames were having their best season in 30 years and had Tkachuk, Bennett, Rittich RFA deals to handle with very little cap space. Keeping Stone would have been tough.

This was it exactly. My brother knows someone on the Flames and he was told that as soon as they talked to Stone they knew they couldn't offer what Ottawa wanted. I took that to mean he wasn't commited to a long term contract.

No, everything was worked out. Stone had an extension in place with the Flames but fate intervened, screwed with our time-line and laughed. We just aren't allowed nice things.

That mayor guy seems like a kings Podcaster and blogger with no association with the Knights It's hard to believe he would have info that the major network insiders wouldnt but who knows. Feels right now like Calgary are one of the more interested parties but going to get beat to him based on the overall twitter trending. The Whitecloucd krebs and two 1sts deal the blogger is talking about makes no sense though unless Stone is gone for the year, that's not enough cap space. And Stone skated today, albeit not with the main group.

It’s a lot but it allows the dollars to work and I think the flames can still be competitive even though that’s a considerable loss to the roster medium term until Eichel gets healthy. Preferably Zary is traded and Pelletier can be promoted to lessen the loss of Dube.

What is this?
I’m dumbfounded by these trade suggestions that have the Flames offering up 5 pieces when the long, and widely, accepted belief is that the Sabres are asking for four (4) pieces.
At this point, I’m not sure they’re even getting four, let alone five.

Stone has talked about it publicly, he wanted to go to Vegas. If Treliving and the Flames felt he would have signed here long term, then I would imagine he would have met the Sens price.
Not sure why people assume it was Treliving who backed out. He would have known exactly what the situation would have been, while none of us do.

"OMG, they've been asking for 4 pieces not 5, you losers. How dare you add exactly one more piece to your proposals."

I'm starting to accept the sense of inevitability that Eichel is heading to Vegas. Flames are winning at least.
