I know people like it, but Spittin Chicklets is a good case study on the current temperature of hockey culture. Frat boy type stuff that transports me back to high school.

Sometimes I'm incredibly thankful I never played organized hockey. This stuff is disgusting.

Late teens/early twenties men are extremely immature, speaking from experience. What they say about girls being 7-8 years ahead of guys in maturity is absolutely true. So you're talking about a group of kids with adult bodies and the brain maturity of 13 year olds fueled by testosterone crammed into a locker room/bus/hotel. Yeah, it was never any wonder why hockey was/is what it was like off the ice growing up tbh.
Still no place for homophobia, humiliation or abuse. But often times the adults are more focused on the game itself to even care, let alone police what goes on.
This is exactly why we need the people in positions of power and authority in the game to educate themselves on these matters.

[MOD EDIT] Absolute incendiary garbage. We don't want this kind of blatantly offensive crap on the Board. You're done.

Is that an attempt at humour? If so, it failed miserably and is the exact problem we are discussing and trying to eradicate. If it is sarcastic it missed badly.
If it is neither, you are part of the problem and should grow up and feel some shame.

Did you play football, soccer, run track, wrestle or any other competitive sport when you were younger? If so how was everyone treated by those sports?

For this very reason, there's something to be said for encouraging 18-year-old males to do a hitch in the army. I never served myself, but several of my friends did, including some that were probably heading for hard prison time or Skid Row if they didn't straighten out. The armed forces showed them how to act like grown men instead of juvenile delinquents. And while learning that, they got to camp out, play with firearms, and make things go boom! What's not to like for a rowdy older teen?
Hockey can't be the army, obviously. But maybe hockey culture could benefit if it spent more energy on teaching and modelling good conduct instead of indulging bad conduct.

Calling people gay as an insult is not unique to hockey.
Nor are all organized hockey teams full of homophobic bullies.
IMO bigger problem is the type of sheltered, put on a pedestal life that so many elite athletes experience starting at such a young age. They simply don’t learn the lessons that so many other people learn through dealing with challenges of everyday life.

I played hockey until my last year of high school and there was a lot of really bad stuff that was done inside and outside of the dressing room in order to be accepted to the team. The positive is that the bonds that form are unlike any others but there are so many negatives looking back at things.

Alright enough is enough. Can we get a mod to ban this clown? You are the problem. Do some self reflecting and grow up.

I listened to half an episode with Lucic once a few years ago, and the way they were talking about women made me turn it off as fast as possible.

You obviously know nothing about the military if you think that way. But then, you use the phrase ‘toxic masculinity’, which in my abundant experience is only ever used by people who think masculinity per se is toxic; so I'm not surprised that you are proud of your ignorance.
