After all the other contracts given out to d-men recently, the AAV isn’t too bad. Leafs will eventually need to move out one of their top 4 paid forwards, though.

Isn't every Leaf like that?

Even looking at fantasy hockey, all of their players are way too owned.

Okay deal, not great, but decent.

Reilly is a 2nd tier, 1st pairing guy. He's a good player, but he isn't comparable to the Dmen that are in the $8-9M.

Except for Nurse. He is probably comparable to Nurse, talent-wise. This is the contract Nurse should have gotten.

Brent Seabrook as top comp.. kind of scary.
Seabrook was an excellent dman who helped backstop the Hawks to 3 Stanley Cups.

He was eventually derailed by injuries.

This is actually a good deal compared to the other Defense contracts handed out this year

Good luck with that Marner cap hit and bonus structure in his contract

Don't see to many teams being interested in trading 2 solid NHL pieces + adding that contract without some sweetener

I think this says more about the player than it does about the GM being good at his job.

Rare to see someone leaving money on the table and rather focus on wanting to win.

gloryhole lifeguard
@phtevens

By taking a discount to stay in Toronto Morgan Rielly has shown he doesn’t care about money or winning. It’s a rare combination in an athlete and I respect it

Yeah I would bet everything I own that Toronto won't win a cup in next 10 years. You can't win when you have 5 guys making $47 million. Leafs defence is really bad and they have 0 depth.

You can see on the chart that he dropped off right at this point in his career before he went off the rails at about 5 years past this point.

0 depth? Where? Certainly they're top heavy, but that's because those guys at the top are stars. The bottom two lines are good, with Dubas seemingly bringing up guys like Bunting, Kerfoot, Kampf every year and letting them go when they becomes worth a lot more. Defence is solid (not great). But the team doesn't have money wasted on any one player. This isn't a Flames discussion but there are several players overpaid for what they bring, and based on that tie up finances year over year. Can't say Toronto has that.

Who on the Flames is overpaid beside Lucic? Leafs are so capped out they couldn't dress two goalies a couple weeks back. Marner is overpaid obviously.

I'm not overly enthused writing this, but sadly Monahan is quite overpaid, over the past 12 months.

I'm optimistic he pulls it together tho.
