A lot of these trade proposals sound like someone caught up in a bidding war on ebay. Everyone wants to see the Flames get better, but at what cost? If you can do this for futures alone then maybe - MAYBE - it's worth the risk. You probably have to have salary going the other way but that has to be someone like Monahan and/or Zadorov, and I don't think Buffalo bites for either of those players. You don't gut your team when it is just starting to gel. Trading Hanifin is a bad idea, packages like Monahan + Dube/Mangiapane + Valimaki + Zary/Coronato/Pelletier + multiple high picks is insanity.
I could understand wanting to "swing for the fences" a little more if Eichel was healthy, but dude has a broken neck. He MIGHT be the same player after his surgery, or he might be a $10M Joakim Nordstrom. Even if he recovers completely, how do you keep him along with a $9M+ Tkachuk, Gaudreau likely at a similar number, and Mangiapane due a huge raise? You'll have to shed talent to get under the cap, which might recoup some of the picks you spend to get Eichel but it makes your team weaker in the near term, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of "win now". Building a team around one or two expensive "elite" players doesn't make you a contender, it makes you the Edmonton Oilers.

Some people seem to think he's 19-year-old Eric Lindros. Even Lindros wasn't worth the haul he was traded for.

If Vegas really is offering Theodore + Krebs + picks + one or more other pieces, I say they can go ahead and blow their brains out. It would gut the Flames to match an offer like that.

I agree. There’s no guarantee that after all this time off and surgery Eichel returns to anything like what he was before. And he’s likely to miss half or more of the remaining season. I understand all the people here wanting to make a splash but it seems like it’s more just to be a team making a big trade then it is too actually benefit the team. No point to cut off your nose to spite your face. I really hope we stay away from Eichel.

I know that sucks. We may want to believe otherwise but that's the reality.
Krebs is the best prospect for either franchise and the one that has top line upside.
If Buffalo wants a quality deal not quantity, it's going to be tough to beat.

Yeah I totally accept that may be consensus and I am a homer who is always going to prefer the flames own prospects, but I can't find any prospect lists ranking him that highly. My homer take is that I see a 17th overall pick who performed as expected as a 19/20 year old in the dub last year and would expect his stock to be similar to where he was picked, maybe a little higher, who has looked overmatched in his 20/21 year old season in the NHL.
He's playing 10-16 minutes a night with PP time, has zero points in seven games, has been a minus in 5 of them and is a negative corsi player on a line with Chandler Stephenson one of the best two way players in the league IMO. And he's playing wing no less. I see a smallish forward who will play in the nhl and contribute eventually, but not somebody who is bursting onto the scene making me think 1st liner. Know he has a ton of runway left and I am a homer and while Coronato was a higher pick who scored bigger in junior was a weaker league and he has no track record in the NCAA so more uncertainty I guess. For me I'd see them as close to equal, higher pick with less track record vs. later pick who has basically proven his draft year was an accurate indication of his talent.

I still think if you did a league wide poll the vast majority would still pick Vegas to finish above Calgary

It doesn't matter what we think it matters what Buffalo thinks
They will take the prospect they think is best

Recency bias probably, but I'm less and less on the Eichel train, as has been pointed out, probably have to give up current roster pieces that would mean we wouldn't be much ahead, if at all. Factor in the risk with Eichel and it doesn't seem worth it.

A lot of those people would be saying, ‘What's a Calgary?’ An opinion poll of people who know nothing about us tells you… well… nothing about us.

Only because he got his brain rattled. The domination of Lindros would have been crazy if that had not happened.

I am not sure I'm on board with an Eichel trade either. His injuries make me extremely nervous to give up what amounts to a huge payment as a result of a possible bidding war ON TOP of already being an extremely high-priced asset.
Wars are not won with one soldier - just ask the Oilers.

Even before Lindros got his brain rattled, Forsberg was a better player. And Forsberg was just one of the pieces in the Lindros trade.
The Rangers won the Stanley Cup with a bunch of pieces that they would have traded for Lindros. The Flyers never won anything with Lindros. Sometimes you're better off as the bridesmaid.

"around the NHL"
as in media and executives...I doubt Buffalo is looking at Calgary's track record and saying gee I think they finish above Vegas this season...or in future seasons if we are talking multiple picks.
Calgary picks would be considered more valuable IMO...almost the same team was a bottom feeder last season and Vegas was a top team.

how old are you?
Lindros had 115 points and 163 PIM in 74 games in the height of the Devils dead puck era. Guy was a dominant force.
Not to say Forsberg wasn't too but I think some people remember old washed up Lindros.

Executives haven't got a crystal ball, and they know it.
A lot of people in the media haven't even got a functioning cerebral cortex, and unfortunately, they don't know it.

A third of the Flames' roster has turned over from last season, and they have a real coach for a change. Vegas has also had turnover, and is missing some key pieces from last season; some due to long-term injury, some permanently.
By the way, missing the playoffs by four points (to a team that actually got fewer wins) does not make you a bottom feeder. For that, look way, way further down.

And his team never won anything, because they traded away far too many assets to get him. Whereas the team that received those assets, which had been the worst in the league for three years running (and second-last to an expansion team the year before the trade), won two Stanley Cups during that same dead-puck era.

They obviously lost the trade...its debatable if Forsberg was better than healthy Lindros.
Lindros was like if Lucic was scoring at McDavid's pace...terrified the opposition in more ways than one
